The San Diego Asian Film Festival is an annual event of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation. Our mission is to connect audiences to the human experience through the Pan Asian media arts. We’ve been around since 2000, premiering films from around the world. Our emphasis is on Asian American cinema, but we also showcase international films, along with shorts, documentaries, and animation. Along with films, patrons will be able to meet and speak with filmmakers and actors, enjoy meaningful discussions, hear live music, and enjoy nightly parties. Most of all, we pride ourselves in being a well-organized, friendly festival made of people who are passionate about life, learning…and having FUN! For more info, check out the site here.

My favorite Asian American cinema experience involves an APA cinema course I took at DePaul University in Chicago with Dr. Yvonne Lau. I was a high school student involved with DePaul’s Asian and Asian American Opportunities Program (DAAAO) and learned about Asian American history, culture, politics, diaspora, and movies! As a non-Asian American learning about the community through film, I learned about the complex, diverse, and unique experiences Asian Americans encompass. \
The films I remember the most are “The Debut” and “Monsoon Wedding”. I remember The Debut because it was a coming-of-age story of a Filipino-American coming to terms with his Asian American side in a predominantly non-APA community in California. His experiences with the cotillion, bonding, engaging with the Filipino community, as well as embracing his APA self are things I clearly remember and adored about the film, particularly as a person of color. Monsoon Wedding was great because of the dancing, cross-cultural dialogue present, issues of family versus self, and the complexities of identity within the Indian/Indo-American community. Adored both of them and I’ve seen them at least 3 times each.
The films really allowed me to see the APA community differently and engage more actively with Chicago Asian-Americans.
can’t wait for this year’s SDAFF
Wonder if they’ll be doing a panel like the LAAPFF did earlier this year with Rising Asian Americans (WFP, Kevin Wu, Yuri Tag, Justin Chon, etc etc), that was a great experience hearing some of their stories and experiences in the business.
I’m so excited for it this year!
