On occasion, it is not rare to arrive to work in tears. What is rare, however, is to arrive to work and be moved to tears in awe of its beauty. As fortune would have it, this was the case for 23-year-old Vanessa Hudgens on the set of the highly anticipated 3D family adventure film JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND.
“It was really amazing. It was paradise basically. I had a hard time prying myself away from beach and when I showed up to work, it was the most amazing scenery that I almost always showed up in tears,” Hudgens said.
Released in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX® on February 10, Journey 2 was filmed on location in Oahu, Hawaii as a follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth”.
Audrey Magazine got the chance to interview the Filipina-Chinese American actress about her experience working on the film, her relationship with her co-stars, and the beauty and adventure that is Hawaii.
What was it like shooting the film?
VH: This was an extremely fun movie to make. I knew that it was fun because I would be filming in Hawaii and being with such an awesome cast but I never realized this would be the time of my life. Dwayne Johnson was such fun. Luis was like a father and Michael Caine was so enthusiastic about his work. We came together with such a random group of people and it was a lot of team effort. We all just had fun making the best movie we could.
What was it like working with your costar Josh Hutcherson?
VH: We had such an incredible time together. We didn’t know each other very well before the movie. We realized we’re so similar in so many ways and really hit it off and stayed true to ourselves and have a good time.
How did you feel watching the movie for the first time?
VH: It was so rewarding. Usually when I watch a movie I’m in I’m constantly kicking myself, critiquing but because the movie was in 3D, it really pulled me into the adventure. It was so much fun. I really enjoyed watching it. I was sitting at the edge of my seat and jumping after watching the movie!
Did you read the book or do any research before the movie?
VH: I didn’t read the book. I don’t think a lot of kids my age and Josh’s age would be really into it. It felt 100 years old so it’s a bit outdated. But my dad was the first person to tell me they were shooting the second movie and I was a massive fan of the first movie.
What was the most adventurous thing you’ve done?
VH: I’m a really adventurous person. I’m very spontaneous and I love being outside and I recently went backpacking in Costa Rica and being in such a lush rainforest with monkeys and mangoes and kayaking. It was a lot of fun and everything I’ve wanted to do.
Can you tell us about your character, Kailani?
VH: Me and Kailani are a bit alike. She’s really close to her father and I’m extremely close to my family as well. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty and that’s like me as well, I love being outside and being at one with nature. I love working out and staying fit especially doing an action movie, it’s important to keep your cardio up.
How does it feel being in the forefront of being one of the top Asian American actors in Hollywood?
VH: It’s such an honor, and a major privilege. I always try to do my best. It’s an honor.
Would you ever go through any of the adventures as your character does in the movie?
VH: I definitely wouldn’t volunteer myself. But I’m fairly adventurous and I love being sucked into things where I don’t know what happens but I’m down to go on an adventure anywhere. I really want to go to India and see the culture and the architecture.
