“As you know this season, we have 15-year-olds trying out. Maybe that was to discover a superstar like Thia.” Those are the words from American Idol’s host, Ryan Seacrest, as he introduced Thia Megia in the Top 12 finalists round, and we couldn’t agree more. Thia, only 15 when she auditioned, is the youngest contestant to ever grace the American Idol stage and I can’t start to explain how talented she is. Just imagine, people are describing her as the younger version of Charice, and that says a lot.

Thia is from Mountain House, Calif., but her family was originally from the Philippines. All her life, she knew she wanted to be a singer and we got to see little Thia singing when she was a little girl on March 16’s episode. In fact, this is not the first time she’s appeared on national television. In 2009, Thia was also in the fourth season of America’s Got Talent. She made the quarter finals, but was cut in the Top 40 round. She has also performed in other public venues and won several singing competitions. She wrote her first song when she was only 6 years old, and unaware of Whitney Houston’s song, she named it “I Will Always Love You.” Thia’s love for singing can be seen at her auditions as well: when she heard about the lowered minimum age requirement, she booked a flight and hotel to Milwaukee, Wisc., immediately to audition for American Idol. There were auditions in California, but she didn’t have the patience to wait and wanted to try out right away. Before she sang in front of the judges, she explained to the judges how she followed American Idol since season one, and has been watching Randy Jackson on television even before she could start reading.

Since I can’t put into words how much I love Thia’s voice, I’ll tell you what the judges have said about her instead. In her auditions, Jennifer Lopez said to Thia, “I love you. I think you’re the total package”, and she became an early judge favorite. She’s cute and bubbly, and with that amazing voice, I can see her going very far. As Hollywood Week passed by, she had some ups and downs, but J. Lo could tell that “Thia, she’s something special.” Her love for Thia continues as she explains that she sings like an angel in the Top 13 episode. But it’s Randy’s compliment that really sums up how amazing she is: “Your tone, it reminded me so much of the late great Michael Jackson. It doesn’t matter what age you are, this is what hot singing is about!” Steven Tyler even said that “sometimes a person’s pitch can be so perfect it doesn’t matter what song they sing, and you just did that. That was beautiful.”
