Audrey Magazine had the privilege to experience celebrity stylist and The Private Room Beverly Hills salon owner Tina Dizon’s expert braiding skills and hair expertise. The Vietnamese American Dizon (who has styled Christina Applegate and Nicole Richie, among others) founded the modern, luxury boutique salon a little less than a year ago to offer heartfelt, high-end service. Known for her exclusive “ballet,” painstakingly customized extensions, Dizon has a passion for hair and people. She talked top spring and summer hair trends as she introduced us to a one-sided French and waterfall braid, color chalking, and fun clip on extensions.

Audrey Magazine: Braids and color chalking were two complimentary services featured at the recent grand opening of The Private Room. Can you tell us a little more about these trends?
Tina Dizon:
A really popular braid is the waterfall braid. Everyone loves it. It literally makes the hair look like water. The tendrils are floating down. A lot of people like that because it looks completely natural, and yet it’s a little romantic. Braids have been around for awhile, but it’s just starting to hit the general public now, whereas before it was in fashion magazines, runways, and style houses. Now, [they’re] starting to sneak up everywhere. Chalking is a way to get the color that you’re seeing on all the runways especially for spring and summer, yet without the commitment.

AM: What are some other hot spring and summer hair trends?
TD:
The updated ponytail and topknots. The wet look is kind of in, a tousled, beachy, but not completely wet look. Hair bands and hair wraps are really in. You can use a nice scarf, which can really change or update any outfit, even jeans and a t-shirt. [Take] any [patterned] scarf… tie it halfway around the head or fold it until it’s like a headband and wrap it around.

AM:
How did you first get into hair?
TD:
I grew up in the South, [and] I used to get ready with my girlfriends and I would do everyone’s hair. When I first told my mom I was going to do hair, she was really upset. Growing up Asian was not easy in the South. [My mom was] always really supportive of what we did, even though she was against it. I think she thought it was a phase I was going through. I started doing hair in Shreveport, Louisiana, and then moved out here [to Los Angeles]. I told my cousins who lived here that I was going to work in Beverly Hills. They thought, ‘who’s going to burst her bubble?’ That was 16 years ago. It’s really been neat watching things happen right in front of my eyes. I didn’t expect to open up The Private Room, it kind of just fell into my lap. It’s been fun. It’s great that I have such a wonderful, amazing team to work with.

AM: What’s your favorite hair product?
TD: My favorite is the UNITE [Professional Salon System brand] 7SECONDS Condition Leave In Detangler. I only use the products that I carry. I use and love them because they’re completely eco-friendly. UNITE is earth conscious, sulfate free, and vegan. I try and use only products that I feel are good for myself and the environment. I would like [The Private Room] to be a very conscious and [environmentally] aware business. That’s very important to me.

More on the color pop trend:

“[Chalking/color popping] washes out the next day or whenever you wash your hair,” said Dizon. “They [pastels by a French company] are all non-toxic, and the pigments that we use are really intense, so you don’t have to mix it with water or product to make it work.”

Thanks to Tina Dizon for her amazing expertise and styling savvy!
