Have you not yet caught Wayne Wang‘s beautiful adaption of Lisa See‘s best-selling novel, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan?

Starring Chinese film queen Li Bing Bing (Audrey’s Summer covergal!) and My Sassy Girl‘s Gianna Jun, the film is a timeless portrait of female friendship.

There’s a whole lot of star power behind the cameras as well. In addition to Joy Luck Club’s Wang direction and See’s writing, media mogul maidens Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan producing.

Here’s a synopsis of the film:

In 19th-century China, seven-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong – or “old sames” – bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan.
In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong’s descendants, Nina (Li Bing Bing, who also plays an older Lily) and Sophia (Gianna Jun, who also plays an older Snow Flower), struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever.
What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

The comments of Chang “Robin” Lee makes me realize that there are so many classic Christmas films that we can share with our friends and family. During this holiday season, I think I will rent all these films and have them play back to back. I can also play the music during Christmas parties whlie we eat chestnuts, Christmas ham, and exchange our presents.

I also agree with Sand. The classic music, classy dancing, and overal whimsy of White Christmas makes it a great film to share with friends and family. As a professional singer and musician, I appreciate the singing of Bing Crosby and the dancing of Danny Kaye with the combination of voice and dance of Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen make this romantic film a wonderful experience.

Julie’s comment reminds me of the days when the beliefe in Santa Claus was so important. Why, it is still important to spread that belief today, even though I am an adult. Miracle on 34th Street is a movie I can watch with both the children in my family (read nieces and nephews) as well as the adults, as many generations can enjoy this tale and classic film.

Jack’s comment has inspired me to check out The Homecoming: A Christmas Story. I would like to add it to my movie queue and watch it with my significant other. Thank you for sharing, Jack!

Steve O.’s comment reminds me of the good times when I was younger, laughing away with my cousins and friends while watching Home Alone. This movie would distract the younger generation while the older generation catches up and prepares the holiday meal. We could also fantasize about outsmarting adults.

I agree with Walter Wu’s comment. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a classic American film about the appreciation of life, especially family friends — as well as self-worth — during the holiday season. The soundtrack is also classic, and I enjoy playing the music during holiday parties.

My favorite holiday movie is Miracle on 34th Street. When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing. This movie brings back the childhood meaning of Christmas — stories of Santa Claus, holiday cheer, and human generosity. Amidst the busy hustle and bustle of the city, the simple sentiments of the holiday is found again. This movie reminds us of our childhood stories and why we believed in them.

My favorite holiday movie is The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971). This was the start of the popular tv series ‘The Waltons’. I am very excited about the ‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ DVD giveaway – I was not able to see this at the theater. From your detailed description above, I would be sure to really enjoy this complex and beautiful story.

My favorite holiday movie during X-mas has to be Home Alone. It’s a childhood favorite of mine that has heart, hilarious comedy, and just an overall cheery and heartfelt story about coming of age and realizing what you cherish of your family when you don’t have it most. Always a great movie to bring your holiday spirits up!

“It’s a Wonderful Life”. A classic with a good message about the holidays, true friendship, and how your actions affect so many other people around you.

My favorite holiday movie is A Christmas Carol. As a child, I was entranced by the spirits whisking away Ebenezer Scrooge to different times in his life. I enjoyed the moral of the story, and I also enjoy remakes of the film. It reminds me of what the holiday seasons are about — generosity and the birth of the saved human spirit. I also retweeted this (@robincognito) and posted it on Faacebook (www.facebook.com/therobinlee). Thank you.
