OK, TMI alert. I’m gonna share something with you that perhaps you just don’t need to know.
My locks are more limp than lustrous. I don’t really need to pluck my eyebrows. I got the few hairs under my armpits zapped a few years ago (it’s a part of the job, man) and that’s pretty much taken care of that area. And I haven’t shaved my legs in more than a decade.
Now, I’m not some bohemian wild child. I’m just not a hairy person. Ask my brothers — they don’t have hair on their legs, either.
Of course, as a beauty editor, that doesn’t stop me from trying every new product on the market. The newest high tech ingredients, the latest salon treatment, the trendiest colors — I’ll try them all, being the human guinea pig that I am. If there’s something cutting edge on the market, I’m game.
What I won’t try (and perhaps this is tied in to the whole hairless thing) is anything involving waxing. And, until now, threading.
I had heard of threading years ago. Yes, it’s an ancient practice of hair removal used safely for centuries in Asia. Yes, it’s better than plucking, shaving and tweezing. And yes, it results in lighter and sparser regrowth. But I didn’t get it. It kind of freaked me out. It didn’t help when I saw esthetician Anita Sun’s new at-home threader, the Threader Lux by Karmissie.
I mean, look at that thing. You have to admit — it’s a bit intimidating. My first thought: beauty may be pain, but does it have to look like a torture device?
That is, until I tried it.
One, it’s super easy to set up and thread. The Threader Deluxe Kit comes with everything you need, including cotton threads, a numbing lotion, and a post-threading toner. (The accompanying DVD explains everything quite clearly.)
And once you get started, it’s a no-brainer. It only takes a few minutes to get the motion right, and then go at it. I watched TV as I used the Threader Lux on my legs to get rid of the little baby hairs on it. (Something that has always frustrated me — not enough to shave, but a bit much to just pluck.)
One word: genius. I’m a convert.
What’s not to love? Use it in the comfort of your own home while watching American Idol (you really can’t mess it up), it’s less expensive than monthly visits to the salon, the natural cotton fibers work to polish the skin while gently rubbing away dead skin cells, and after I use it, I have four weeks of baby hair-free legs. (P.S. you can use it on your face, arms, anywhere really.)
It’s such an amazing product, Neiman Marcus is selling the Kit for $125, which comes with the Threader Lux, chalk, 48 cotton blended replacement threads, Feel Less numbing lotion, The Closer toner, an instructional booklet, and an instructional DVD that features a brow shaping segment. But five lucky Audrey readers are going to be able to test it out for themselves, thanks to our Thank Goodness It’s Free Friday giveaway today!

I hope you can still count my entry!
My favorite story was Food Fail, because the advice Natalie Minh gave was very realistic and do-able. It also motivated me to eat healthier.

I LOOVED the AAs in television feature because it brought me back to the old days when I use to watch my fave show, California Dreams. =]
The story on the spoken word poet Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai, made me recollect the first time I went to a poetry slam. From the first-timers to the experienced performers, all took my breath away with their courage to speak about what was personal to them. After checking out some of Tsai’s performances on YouTube, lyrics from “Real women I know” was particularly powerful to me.
“Real women I know are mothers
unexpectedly the babies come
and teach us to stand
with two feet on the ground
arms stretched wide open
ready for whatever arrives.”
wow… I then turned to my 2.5 year old daughter and said,”Did you know that you taught me to stand with two feet on the ground?” She looked at me and said,”Huh?!” Then she got off the bench and stood balancing with one foot on top of the other and said,”You mean like this?” I smiled. Yes, like that.
this invention is wonderful! i always spend money getting my eye brows threaded but if i had this at home, i can do it myself. that’s amazing!
and of course i loved the cover story- OLIVIA MUNN! who doesn’t? she’s beautiful and she’s hapa!
I love the Generation Diverse story – AAs are making so many strides in entertainment!
