Throwback Thursday: Top 5 SHAGs (Smoking Hot Asian Guys) of 2013

Now some of you may be wondering why we have the SHAG (Smoking Hot Asian Guys) series to begin with. Before you judge, let us clarify a few things. This series was not created simply because we want to oggle at attractive men and base their worth on their looks. That would be far from our purpose.

This series was created because over the years we’ve recognized something very unfortunate. As Asians, we’ve been plagued by a number of negative stereotypes. Sure, we’ve been able to fight off some of these myths, but many of these stereotypes still continue strongly today. One of the most widely known? A stereotype against Asian men.

Asian men, for some unknown reason, have been labeled as unattractive here in America.

Of course, mainstream media is largely responsible for this. Too many times have we seen Asian males stereotyped with traits such as short, skinny, nerdy and awkward. While it’s fine to have these traits, media is clear about its intent:  these traits are supposed to come off as unappealing to the public eye. Too many times have we heard that Asian girls can “date any race they want” while poor Asian men are left empty-handed.

Just look at the social media shots fired at New Zealand singer/songwriter Lorde concerning her “scrawny Asian boyfriend.” With such a high number of racist stereotypes thrown at him, we really begin to see just how mainstream media has depicted Asian men.

Of course, we know better. Asian men can be just as attractive, sexy and appealing as any other. This series was created to counter the very incorrect stereotype Asian men have been facing for years. Whether its their looks, talent, sense of fashion or even intelligence, these men have proven themselves as desirable.

For today’s Throwback Thursday, we look back on the most popular SHAGs of the past year. We present to you the Top 5 SHAGs (Smoking Hot Asian Guys) of 2013.

Why Has China Fallen in Love With These Siblings?

Here at Audrey Magazine, we have two series that seem to do particularly well: The Daily SHAG (Smoking Hot Asian Guy) and Adorable Asian Babies.

So what happens when you combine the two topics? Apparently, you get China’s new viral sensation.

David Woo, a young man from Guangzhou, China, began his Weibo account in 2010. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Weibo, it is described as China’s version of Twitter. Much like many other young adults in their early 20′s, Woo had a typical amount a followers that consisted of his family and friends.

But then, Woo began posting pictures of himself alongside his sister Peipei. The adorable girl is 18 years younger than her brother and proved to be a social media magnet. Soon, Woo discovered that his brother-sister posts would get over 100,000 likes on the social media platform.

Clearly, David Woo had stumbled upon something special. Maybe it’s the adorable amount of love between the siblings. Maybe it’s because Chinese netizens like looking at an older brother who takes very good care of his little sister. Whatever the reason may be, China can’t get enough of the duo.

Check out the adorable sibling pictures for yourself.

The Daily SHAG: Mario Maurer

If there’s anyone that has the right to be called a SHAG (Smoking Hot Asian Guy), that would have to be Mario Maurer.

This 25-year-old Thai German actor and model is actually of Chinese and German decent. At the age of 16, Maurer began his modeling career, but it wasn’t until 2007 that he was thrown into fame with his lead role in The Love of Siam. The film received critical acclaim and dominated in Thailand’s 2007 film awards season. Maurer’s portrayal of the character Tong gained him the Best Actor award in Southeast Asian film category at the 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival, Best Actor Award for the Starpics Awards and a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the Asian Film Awards at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Maurer is also known for his roles in First Love and as the lead role in Thailand’s highest grossing film of all time, Pee Mak, which has earned more than $33 million in revenue worldwide.

The Thai actor has also been gaining quite a bit of popularity in the Philippines for his role in the 2012 Filipino Thai romantic comedy romantic film, Suddenly It’s Magic. In an interview with Philippine Inquirer, Maurer discussed his good experience working in the Philippines.

“There are not many differences, except… in Thailand, it’s easier for me to get acquainted with coworkers. When I did “Suddenly,” I had to use my second language (English). But the Filipinos never let me feel I was from a different place. I was happy to work with them,” he remarked. When asked if he would consider working there again, Maurer replied, “Yes, of course. If I find time, I’ll come back-no problem. But first I want to speak better Filipino. It’s a very cute language.”

Polite, hardworking AND attractive? Mario Maurer clearly deserves to be our Daily SHAG.

The Daily SHAG: Sen Mitsuji

Today’s eye candy is none other than Sen Mitsuji! This gorgeous half Australian, half Japanese man was born on the 26th of November 1987. He is currently signed on to three different agencies: Be Natural – Tokyo, Bananas- Paris, and Ford – New York.

Aside from being a model, he is also a photographer and director. His work can be seen on his tumblr and his official website, This is Sen.

Not much is known about the mysterious and alluring model, but his work shows a definite appreciation for art, dance, and beauty. One of his films, Ange, highlights interpretive dancing. Another film, Pat & Kikka, shows a man chasing his love before it’s too late. Whatever the theme may be, Sen shows a mastery of style in his work.

And of course, Sen’s main talent is being in front of the camera. With protruding lips and eyes that stare deeply into the camera, it’s no wonder he’s caught so much attention! Check out some of his photos below.

The Daily SHAG: A Shirtless COLE HORIBE As Bruce Lee [Photos & Video]

Back in October, excitement was in the air when it was announced that Cole Horibe was chosen to play the legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee, in the world premiere of David Henry Hwang’s new play Kung Fu. The play, directed by Leigh Silverman, will premier in February of the upcoming year.

So who exactly is this Cole Horibe you ask? He was a contestant on the ninth season of So You Think You Can Dance in the category of martial arts fusion. During Hwang’s search for the perfect Bruce Lee, Cole Horibe made quite the impression.

“Cole’s electrifying martial arts and dance performances immediately riveted me,” explains Hwang. “He shared Bruce’s charisma and even resembled him physically. Later, in his auditions for Kung Fu, he brought the same raw talent to his acting that he’d shown so brilliantly in his dance. We feel incredibly blessed to have found in Cole a star who can bring a legend to life.”

All of Horibe’s talent is perfect for the play which combines dance, martial arts, Chinese opera and drama to tell the tale of the martial arts icon.

Much to our excitement, some first look photos of (a shirtless) Horibe channeling his inner Bruce Lee have been released. Clearly, he deserves to be today’s Daily SHAG (Smoking Hot Asian Guy).

Check out some of the photos below as well as some swoon-worthy behind-the-scenes footage of the photoshoot.

The Daily SHAG | EXO For Ivy Club Photoshoot [VIDEO INCLUDED]

Recently, 17-year-old singer/songwriter Lorde was cyberbullied for her “nerdy Asian boyfriend,” James Lowe. Lowe was met with every negative Asian male stereotype in the book.

Situations like this is precisely the reason Audrey created the Daily SHAG (Smoking Hot Asian Guy) to prove that, contrary to popular belief, Asian men in all shapes and sizes can be desirable.

Who better to portray this than K-pop’s current dreamboats, EXO? The 12 member boy band, which consist of Korean and Chinese members, clearly bring an array of looks, personalities and body types. They easily prove that Asian men are perfectly capable of being hot.

Ivy Club has already used EXO to advertise many of their looks and thankfully, they decided to use EXO’s boyish charm for their Winter 2013-2014 line.

The boys are accompanied by actress Seo Yea Ji while they make school uniforms look more attractive than we could have ever imagined.

Click below for some Daily SHAG pictures you’re sure to enjoy. As an added bonus, we’ve included the behind-the-scenes footage of this swoon-worthy photoshoot. And if you still find yourself lost and unable to distinguish the members, have no fear. Check out The Ultimate Guide to EXO.

The Daily SHAG: Sam Milby

Though he may have gotten his showbiz start on reality TV, Filipino actor-singer Sam Milby has proven that he’s much more than just a pretty face.  The 29-year old, Ohio-raised Milby first caught eyes on the first season the Philippine’s edition of Big Brother back in 2005.  Though he didn’t win the competition, he certainly grabbed the nation’s attention with his charming looks and personality and has kept it ever since.

After signing with ABS-CBN’s Star Magic talent agency, he’s since released a string of hit records (with his stripped-down, guitar-laden sound earning him the nickname “Prince of Romance” and “Rockoustic Heartthrob”) and starred in numerous Philippine blockbuster films and hit dramas, including the recently ended Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala.  His next project is another film entitled The Gifted, where he’ll be reunited with former girlfriend (and Philippine superstar) Anne Curtis — a definite must-see for fans of the Sam-Anne tandem.

While he may be in a real-life love battle to win the heart of it-girl Jessy Mendiola, he certainly has earned his place in our eyes as one of the hottest guys in the industry today and the title of today’s SHAG.  Find out why below!

Check out any of his editorials — he’s mastered the brooding model pose and looks amazing while doing so.

He’s business-savvy, having invested in music an concert ventures and most recently becoming a co-owner of a German restaurant and pub called Prost, located at the Fort Strip in Bonifacio Global City.

He’s a proud pinoy, doing his part to promote tourism outside of his acting and singing gigs (see left).  But humor aside, he even walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in a barong, a traditional, embroidered shirt from the Philippines (see right).

The Daily SHAG | Mike Concepcion

Despite being deemed one of the Philippines’ Top 10 “It Guys,” Manila-based Mike Concepcion is much more than a pretty, Moscot-glasses wearing face.  The 22-year old has made quite the name for himself in the Manila scene as a student, model, TV host and entrepreneur — you can count the uber-cool Manila Pop-Up and the popular restaurant Yabu under some of his accomplishments.  With a refreshingly classic style and a niche for business, Mike’s a total package.  While he may be taken by the gorgeous Jessica Connelly, it definitely doesn’t hurt to admire from afar.
