Get That Look: Cold Weather Looks à la Our Favorite Style Muses

With temperatures slowly dipping and chill factor slowly increasing, this means we’re busting out our favorite cold weather gear!.  But take note, warm holiday sweater ≠ Cosby sweater (unless you want it to, of course).  In any case, take some cues from some of our favorite Asian and Asian American fashionistas and end the year in style.  Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 4.20.44 PM1 – Madewell Shirttail Skirt; 2 – Milly Jacquard Plaid Skirt; 3 – Rebecca Taylor Dolman Sleeve Cropped Knit; 4 – Topshop ALPY Velvet Lace Up Boots; 5 – SoleSociety Delancey; 6 – T by Alexander Wang Stretch-Cotton Top; 7 – H&M Long Shirt; 8 – LNA Cotton Flannel

In the past few years, plaid has made its resurgence as a go-to pattern, no longer being reserved for lumberjack and woodsmen. But rather than just wearing the print as a button-up, pull inspiration from the ’90s like style bloggers Jenny Ong, who’s channeling Cher Horowitz with her plaid skirt and sweater combo (avoid looking like a schoolgirl by picking a non-pleated skirt), and Tricia Gosingtian, who adds a bit of punk flair to her feminine outfit with clashing patterns and a plaid wrap-around.

Like models Sui He and Shu Pei, play with the idea of volume with your outerwear, especially if it’s in military green (a virtual neutral, if we do say so).  Take a more relaxed look like Sui He and couple a bomber jacket with a boyfriend jean, but keep the look clean and downtown-ready with a knit sweater, sneakers and perfectly coiffed hair.  For a more streamlined look like Shu Pei’s, couple a more fitted jean or legging with a bulky wool coat for balance.

As the most practical (and logical) winter wear trend, layering has become standard in chilly temperatures.  Avoid looking and feeling frumpy by picking pieces in different textures, weights, patterns and lengths; for instance, make like model Fei Fei Sun and K-Pop star Nana and couple a light collard shirt with a sweater (the perfect way to keep using that chambray!).  Pair a light, slightly oversized knit (like cashmere — Uniqlo’s is only $20-$30!) with a long cardigan like Fei Fei or if wearing a heavier coat like Nana, a thicker knit.

What will you be wearing this December?

Asians in Fashion | Vogue China’s 8th Anniversary

(On left: Sui He; On right: Liu Wen)

To mark their eighth year as a publication, Vogue China called on photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin to shoot eight different covers for their September 2013 edition, each of which feature one of eight of the world’s top models.  Four of the covers spotlight four of China’s own (and some of our favorite cover girls) — Xiao Wen Ju, Sui He, Liu Wen and Fei Fei Sun — as well as Daria Strokous, Doutzen Kroes, Kati Nescher and Sasha Pivovarova.

Asian Models Round-Up: NYFW FW12

Liu Wen in Alexander Wang FW12.

Ming Xi in Badgley Mischka FW12.

Twenty-two-year-old Ming Xi found a boost in her career just two years ago and now she is one of the top Chinese models. Walking for shows such as Zac Posen, Y-3 and Badgley Mischka, she is one of the most sought out Asian models both for the runway and for print.

SHU PEI

Shu Pei in Diane von Furstenberg FW12.

Coming at a close second, Shu Pei walked almost as many shows as Liu Wen for names like Vera Wang, Michael Kors, DKNY, Herve Leger, BCBG Max Azria, J Mendel and Helmut Lang.

SO YOUNG KANG

So Young Kang in Cynthia Rowley FW12.

Making her debut runway in the US in 2010, So Young Kang now walks for over 10 shows at NYFW. This Korean model has been seen in the shows of Badgley Mischka, Cynthia Rowley, Proenza Schouler and Creatures of the Wind.

Newcomer

LINA ZHANG

Lina Zhang in Marchesa FW12.

Chinese model Lina Zhang walked the runways of 3.1 Philip Lim, Tory Burch, Marchesa, Herve Leger, Ralph Lauren and more. That’s quite an accomplishment for a relatively newcomer; she made her debut just last year.

SUNG HEE

Sung Hee in Vivienne Tam FW12.

With so many famous Chinese models, Sung Hee is one of the few top Korean models to appear in NYFW. She walked the shows of Vivienne Tam, Tory Burch and Creatures of the Wind to name a few.

SUI HE

Sui He in Donna Karan FW12

I first noticed Sui He when she walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Now in the recent NYFW, she has been seen in Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Peter Som, Helmut Lang, Proenza Schouler and more.

TIAN YI

Tian Yi in Rachel Zoe FW12.

At only 17, Tian Yi is a new, young face that we should look out for. Walking for shows such as Vivienne Tam, Rachel Zoe and Rebecca Taylor, she sure has a lot of potential to become a big name in modeling.

XIAO WEN

Xiao Wen in Jill Stuart FW12.

Last but not least, we have Xiao Wen, who’s only 19! Appearing in approximately fifteen shows, she can be seen in 3.1 Philip Lim, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Jill Stuart and DKNY.

Liu Wen’s modeling career really skyrocketed last year when she signed with Estee Lauder and became the first East Asian model to ever walk the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but her success doesn’t stop there.
