Get this Kpop Look | Girls’ Generation “I Got a Boy” Music Video
Post by Kanara • January 09, 2013 • Post a comment

Watch out – the girls are back! Girls’ Generation have finally made their Korean comeback with their fourth studio album, I Got a Boy. Of course, this did not go unnoticed, as the music video for the titular track has already racked up over 24 million views in just a little over a week. The song is quite catchy (and admittedly, just all over the place) – we also couldn’t help but notice the wacky fashion of the video (which was all over the place as well).

Click on to see as some pieces we put together to create a SNSD-styled look for “I Got a Boy”! (Click the images to see where you can get these items too!)

Where I Went and What I Bought: Seoul
Post by Anna • June 25, 2012 • Post a comment

I took a dream vacation last month. Not to some tropical hideaway surrounded by crystal clear waters. Not to a romantic European capital overflowing with crumbling palaces and fine wine. No, I went on a shopping vacation. To Korea.

Shopping in Myeongdong, an old part of town revitalized with everything from nouveau Korean street food (french fry-covered corndog and french fries on a stick, anyone?) to cutting edge indie boutiques to Seoul's flagship Uniqlo store. Photo from flickriver.com.

For me, Seoul is the place to go to shop. Tokyo – too expensive. Singapore – too western. Hong Kong – too inconsistent. While Seoul may not be the bargain it used to be, the quality of goods and quantity of goods make it a shopper’s dream. So when my husband told me he was going on a once-in-a-lifetime Pebble Beach weekend with the boys, I took that as my cue to plan a once-in-a-lifetime-solely-to-shop-without-the-hubby trip with my mom.

Fashion is art and designer Trina Turk joined forces with The Decorative Arts and Design Council (DADC) of LACMA on May 23rd to raise funds for the acquisition of new items for the museum.

Guests shop the Trina Turk boutique in Los Angeles

In recent years, Asian American designers have come to the forefront of the fashion industry. Trina Turk, whose Japanese mother taught her how to sew at a young age, was ahead of the curve. Founding her fashion company in 1995 along with her husband, photographer Jonathan Skow, Turk’s first line was immediately picked up by major department stores such as Barney’s New York and Saks Fifth Avenue. Since then, her company has expanded to 11 deliveries per year, including a men’s line and home décor.

Into the Fold: Julie Chen of The Pleat
Post by Melody • March 28, 2011 • Post a comment

Admit it, we all love fashion magazines. Something about flipping through those glossy pictures and looking through incredible fashion finds just brightens up our day and makes time go by faster. But then there’s a problem. No, more than just one. You see something amazing listed, but then you realize it costs $25,000. You spot something affordable, but you don’t know if it’s available in all stores, select stores, or whether or not you can just get it online. Oh, and there’s also the issue that magazines are not issued very often. That’s where a blogazine comes in. The Pleat, started by Julie Chen, Samara D’auria, Desiree Marr and Tiffanie Graham, is a site that covers all aspects you’d want to know about fashion: What’s hot now? Where can we get these items at an affordable price? What celebrity looks are they digging? What designers should we be on the lookout for? What are some deals we should take advantage of? The best part is that it’s updated often, so you’ll always know the latest information.

Founders of The Pleat. Julie Chen on the top right.

We got a chance to get the inside scoop from Julie Chen, co-founder and managing editor of The Pleat, to get some fashion advice and learn more about this exciting new website you should all be following!

TGIFree Friday Giveaway: Fendi Sunglasses from Modnique
Post by Anna • January 14, 2011 • Post a comment

I remember when sample sales were a rare, coveted event. Designers would set out runway samples and alert only a select, elite few to come peruse their wares at ridiculously low prices. The designers themselves would even be present, giving advice on how you can take in the back or sneaking out special merchandise for you. (I still have the slim-cut stone trench with sequin trimmed belt that Phillip Lim, during his pre-3.1 days, brought out for me at his warehouse during a Development — his former label — sample sale a half a dozen years back. Sigh.)

Nowadays, sample sales are aplenty, but who has time to trek out to some out-of-the-way warehouse to pick through stuff that, well, has been picked through? Thank goodness for online discounters and sample sales — it can make a slow work day quite productive.

Modnique is one such sample sale trove. The retailer of designer merchandise at highly discounted prices save its members up to 85 percent off well-known brands such as Valentino, Miss Sixty, Covet, Lalique, Gucci, Fendi and more. Everything sold on Modnique (read: Modern meets Unique) is guaranteed to be 100 percent brand new and authentic.

The catch? You only have anywhere from 36 to 72 hours to nab sale items of specific brands, and it’s only available to its members. (But membership is free, so why wouldn’t you join?)

Try it out! To get you started, Modnique and Audrey Magazine are giving away a pair of Fendi sunglasses to one lucky reader. It’s the Fendi FS474M, length 5.5 inches, made in Italy (of course), and retails for $275.

So here’s what you have to do:

1. Go through Audrey Magazine’s winter 2010-11 issue and tell us your favorite part of the magazine and why.

2. If you don’t have a copy of our winter issue (what?!?), then tell us your favorite story at AudreyMagazine.com and tell us why.

3. Do this via comment to this post by Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 11:59 pm. Don’t forget, you must have a U.S. mailing address to win.

Good luck!

It’s Coat Season!
Post by Melody • December 28, 2010 • Post a comment

It’s December and winter is finally here! Though it’s still about 70 degrees here in Los Angeles as I write this, it’s bound to get chilly soon so it’s time to stock up on some winter clothes. This season, wear a coat to keep you warm through the cold days. There’s a ton of coats out there and that makes it difficult to choose which one to buy. Here, I breakdown the things you have to consider when choosing a coat.

Winter Coats

Length: If you’re looking for something more mature to go with your formal looks, go for something longer, like one that’s down to your knees. Avoid going any longer if you’re not especially tall; you don’t want your coat to wear you. Coats that are too long for your figure make you look even shorter. For more casual outings, keep your coat at hip-length or above. Being only 5’1″ myself, I went for a coat that goes down to my hips, which is a very versatile length to dress up or down.

Color/Pattern: Normally, people go for black or dark gray because they go with virtually every outfit. This is a wise decision, but make sure you have your lint roller ready! If you’re feeling bold, try a sharper color, like red, teal or purple. Looking for something in between? Camel tone is a popular choice. There is also the option of going for a pattern, like houndstooth, tweed or plaid.

Winter Coats2

Buttons: Buttons are one of the main features of a coat. Double-breasted peacoats are the most common, but there are also single-breasted coats. There can be buttons down the whole front or just the top half. The types of buttons defer as well, such as plain, military or toggle. Buttons are really just a personal preference, so just choose what you like.

Detailing: The different styles of coats are expanding. If you like ruffles, some coats have ruffled bottoms or collars. This also applies to faux fur. Personally, I don’t prefer either because they make coats seem even chunkier, but do take into account that I am petite in size. But if you like them, I say go for it!

Black Friday Newbie
Post by Katrina • November 27, 2010 • Post a comment

So far, I’ve written two posts about my first time experiences at certain events, but one thing’s for sure with the Black Friday event: it may also just be my last due to the uncontrollable shopping mania brought out in bargain hunters.

I returned home from the Los Cerritos Mall’s first-ever special sales event called Midnight Madness at approximately 12:05 a.m. Yes. I came, I saw, I immediately left.

The Los Cerritos Mall hosted Midnight Madness where 80 stores and eateries opened at 12 a.m.

Upon entering, I saw a serpentine line looping around the stores, like a Disneyland ride meets Cabbage Patch Kids frenzy. Many super savers waited near the display windows in anticipation of the doors opening at stores like Forever 21 and Metropark — a sight I usually associate with loiterers near Westwood or The Santa Monica Promenade.

Forever 21's flagship store in Cerritos was the most popular of the night.

The day after the turkey holiday is a garish display of the consumptionist ways of Americans, and now it is slowly spreading to countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. If American’s aren’t stuffing our stomachs, then we are stuffing our stockings (while emptying our wallets).

In fact, such a zoo crazy day can lead to bad judgment and arguments. Just last night, the Los Cerritos Mall was put on lockdown after gunshots were fired around 2:30 a.m.

So no more shopping malls — or rather, shopping mauls, for me any time soon. I’m thankful for being safe from all the ruckus and for saving cash because I usually shop at my favorite thrift shop anyways, where pieces go for $1.91 and up. One man’s trash is Katrina’s pride and joy! Here are my thrift store finds from Black Friday (from the mesh crop top to the ombre wool hair sweater to the lace bodysuit):

I found all five of these pieces for less than $12 total!
