PaperDoll: Can’t Concentrate
Post by Florence • November 02, 2011 • Post a comment

Judging from their latest music video, the New York-based indie rock band, PaperDoll, is having a hard time concentrating; but not the least bit of trouble entertaining.  This comes as no surprise, as PaperDoll is known for their uninhibited, high-energy live shows.

Back from their six-city, seventeen-show tour of China, PaperDoll released their latest music video for single “Can’t Concentrate” on October 20th, 2011.

Led by the band’s vocalist, Teresa Lee, who is of Chinese, Thai, and Taiwanese decent, the video features the best of New York’s hula hooping talent and was filmed in Navatman dance studio in Midtown Manhattan.

“Can’t Concentrate” is the band’s fourth official music video, and was produced by Meteor Award Winner Michael Moloney.  “Can’t Concentrate” is available on iTunes, amazon, and all major online retailers.   The group is also currently being featured in a NIKE campaign airing in Greater China.

Catch PaperDoll Live!
Post by Soohee • April 25, 2011 • Post a comment

The New York-based indie rock band PaperDoll is back with a new single “You Can’t Stop It” and are ready to rock with a nationwide tour kicking off later this month. The band members Teresa Lee (vocals/keyboard), Patrick Moloney (guitar), Steve Paelet (bass), and Chip Thomas (drums) have been widely praised for their always energetic and powerful live performances, and the tour promises to be no exception.

PaperDoll’s first stop for their East Coast/West Coast tour is College Prep High School in Oakland, California (because West Coast is the Best Coast … kidding!) and will go cross country until their final stop in Washington, D.C. Although this will be their third tour, this is the first to take place in their home country, the U.S. (the first tour was in 2009 in Ireland, and the second in 2010 in China). The band first got their start in New York’s Lower East Side through their infectious unique mix of dance, pop, and rock. The one-of-a-kind musical stylings have landed PaperDoll’s music in commercials by NIKE and Dayquil, and can also be heard on Good Day New York, The Today Show, MTV, Blender, Maxim, Gotham, and various films including The People I’ve Slept With.

Audrey’s Night Out Red Carpet Fashion: Black vs. Color
Post by Janice • October 02, 2010 • Post a comment

Deciding what to wear to an event can be a grueling task. Do you overdress? Underdress? Do you wear your favorite classics or try something trendier?

And in the case of a fashion show, the age old question can be, do you go with black or color?

Through my red carpet corresponding, I’ve found most celebs sticking to the classic black for the evening. Nevertheless, some found great ways to spruce up a basic. But is it better than donning a bright hue? Let’s take a look at the competition.

The Blacks:

Serena Yang sassed up her LBD with geometric gems on the shoulder blades and killer shoes.

On any other man, this outfit would look a bit frumpy and hobo-ish but Jack Yang is not any other man. Blackjack!

Pro ping pong player (dude, I know, right?) Soo Yeon Lee kind of has this Halloween witchy costume thing going on but she’s dang gorgeous so she pulls it off.

Love Karin Anna Cheung’s blingin’ chains and hot skirt.

Same for Kavi Ladnier

Lina So looks classy and elegant…and kind of out of place at this event!

Nikki Soohoo’s white stripes brings a stark contrast to her black strapless.

The Colors

Ashley Jones supports designer Jenny Han with a jewel-toned purple cocktail that looks comfy and stylish.

James Kyson Lee had a flight to NY that evening which may explain why he was so warmly dressed for the warm evening. Nonetheless, shnazzy scarf!

Lynn Chen sports a casual maroon top. We were more in love with her fabulous professional do. The first time she ever got her hair done for an event!

Mayleen Ramey looks super Californian cool in this breezy sundress and flat sandals. ROck ‘em girlfriend!

Michelle Phan’s blue gem-toned cocktail was a nice contrast to the red carpet.

Paperdoll’s unique style is shown through each members’ different fashion choices.

Sheetal Sheth rocked her gunmetal gray jumpsuit.

So what do you think? Is it cooler to stay in edgy black for the evening or don a bright hue? If you want my opinion…

I wore this for the evening (pictured here interviewing Justin Chon).  So I say: viva la color!

World Expo Premiere: Bottega Veneta and Tan Dun
Post by Anna • August 05, 2010 • Post a comment

Expo 2010 Shanghai Culture Centre.

With the World Expo going on, Shanghai is the place to be right now. (They’ve gotten 10 million visitors since May!) Audrey contributor Janice Jann was just there as part of the Miss LA Chinatown goodwill tour. Hip New York-based indie band PaperDoll, headed by Chinese-Taiwanese-Thai American vocalist Teresa Lee Chaisiri , is in Shanghai right now to perform at the World Expo (August 10 & 11), and they just performed at Shanghai’s oldest underground live music venue, Yuyintang, yesterday.

Iconic Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun.

Everyone seems to be getting into the Expo act, including international fashion and accessories brand Bottega Veneta. The Italian brand is partnering with Academy Award-winning composer, conductor and cultural ambassador Tan Dun for a world premiere concert called “Martial Arts Trilogy.” The concert — which combines elements of Tan’s acclaimed scores from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero and The Banquet — is expected to be the top cultural event at the six month-long Expo and will take place this Saturday, August 7. Tan will be conducting the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, China Youth Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Philharmonic Chorus at the new 18,000 seat Expo 2010 Shanghai Culture Center.

This concert, sponsored by Bottega Veneta, represents a shared commitment to foster young creative talent and nurture the next generation of musicians, designers and creators. “It is a pleasure and also a responsibility, I believe, to help young designers and artists share their work with the widest possible audience,” said Tomas Maier, creative director of Bottega Veneta, which also developed an artisan training program at the Scuola Della Pelletteria in Vicenza, and sponsored a student design competition at the University of Tokyo last spring.

In addition to the China Youth Symphony Orchestra, the concert will feature young soloists from around the world, including Italian cellist Amedeo Cicchese, Japanese violinist Ryu Goto, China’s guqin player Lu Xiaozi, and Chinese American pianist Sun Jiayi.

Bottega Veneta's limited edition Spring Bud bag. There are only 26 of them in the world!

To celebrate the concert and partnership, Bottega Veneta has created a limited edition bag (there are only 26 of them!) to benefit the Spring Buds Project. The limited edition bag which will be sold at all their China stores and one will be auctioned off online. All 26 purchasers of the bag will receive two VIP tickets to the concert.

All the proceeds of the bags will be donated to the Spring Buds Project of CCTF, a public fundraising fund committed to helping every child in China to develop their overall physical, mental and social potential, and to help them become self-reliant, contributing members to their communities. The Spring Bud Project, launched in 1989, aims to help girls in poverty stricken and education deprived regions get back to school. In the last 18 years, the Spring Bud Program has sponsored the education and practical skills training of more than 1.7 million girls in China. The Program’s latest efforts focus on vocational training and even entrepreneurship.

Benatar + Stefani + Nerd Pop = PaperDoll
Post by han • July 06, 2010 • Post a comment

It’s been forever since I last listened to indie music. Though my taste in music has changed since my young’un days when I blasted The Killers or the next up-and-coming band, I can still appreciate it — the power blast from the lyrics and amazing guitar riffs, especially if it’s catchy enough to push repeat.

PaperDoll, an Asian American girl-fronted indie rock band, just conquered Kollaboration NY and is on their way to play in Shanghai at Frexh 2010 and the World Expo.

PaperDoll is, from left, Chip Thomas (drums), Steve Paelet (bass), Patrick Moloney (guitar), and Teresa Lee Chaisiri (vocals). Photo by Lorie Reilly.

Reminiscent of No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani’s vocals supported by a steady stream of drum and bass and everything in between, Chinese-Taiwanese-Thai American vocalist Teresa Lee Chaisiri packs a powerful punch. Her voice soars above the intermingling melodies and the steady pound of the percussion as it heralds lyrics that pull you into the music to create an incredible blend of punk soul.

PaperDoll.

Rolling Stone said they “embody the defiance and joie de vivre that define rock music,” while MTV World described them as “Harder than The Killers and tighter than Pat Benatar ever was. Pure post‐punk energy with a melodic heart.”

Take a listen to their song “If Nothing Happened” off their debut album Ballad Nerd Pop:

Teresa even sings in Mandarin in their song “Anything At All.”

PaperDoll kicked butt at Kollaboration NY last month (how could they not with a front woman in such a cute, retro get-up?).
