Controversy Over Miranda Kerr’s Vogue Japan Photoshoot: Cultural Appropriation vs. Cultural Appreciation

 

Miranda Kerr is certainly no stranger to Japan. This time last year, the 31-year-old Australian model attracted quite a bit of attention for her odd, Japanese detergent commercials. Well it looks like she’s back and this time, she’s on the cover of the special 15th anniversary November issue of Vogue Japan.

While this excited many Kerr fans, much of that excitement was replaced with confusion when shots from the photo shoot were released. It was immediately clear that the actress was dressed to look like a geisha, a samurai and even an anime character. Of course, this begs the question: Where is the line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, and what does this categorize as?

Most seem to be leaning towards cultural appropriation. Angry netizens question why a Japanese model wasn’t used for the 15th anniversary issue of  Vogue Japan. After all, the magazine is a Japanese-language magazine. Despite Kerr’s undeniable popularity in Japan, Japanese readers have been shaking their heads in disapproval of the choice to have a foreigner in “Japanese-inspired” outfits.

However, others have come to Kerr’s defense including the photographer of the photo shoot, Mario Testino. In response to the controversy he explained, “I wanted to represent ancient and modern Japan with these three characters. Japan has geisha and samurai, as well as manga, and I hoped to express these themes through Miranda to the Japanese people.”

Some Kerr fans have even used cosplay as an example of cultural appreciation and note that race does not matter when avid fans dress up as their favorite anime or comicbook character. They argue that this photo shoot does the same. To others, the rebuttal for this argument is simple: this is not cosplay. This is a magazine which creates influence and for some, shapes beauty standards.

Kerr has not released her opinion on the matter, but she has been putting up photos on her Instagram since earlier this month.

Korean Woman Gets Plastic Surgery to Look Like Miranda Kerr

Complete makeovers aren’t uncommon. Some of us at some point might need a change in how we do things or in how we look. The question is, then, how far are you willing to change, and what type of person are you willing to become?

For one South Korean woman, it was a question of whom. On a recent episode of Martian X-Files, a Korean reality TV show that spotlights eccentric and unique non-celebrities, one of the guests was a woman who underwent plastic surgery to look like Australian model Miranda Kerr.

The wannabe emphasized that she only had work done on her eyes and nose, according to Soompi. Even from a young age, she said, people would tell her mother that she looked like an “adorable non-Korean child” and asked if her father was from overseas. One time, the guest and her mother got into a taxi. The driver, thinking that they were foreigners, asked where they were from and was surprised when they responded in Korean.

The segment followed the guest as she goes through her makeup ritual. She begins with the universal step one, foundation. The next step is her eyebrows, to which she adds a sharp taper to imitate Kerr’s. She spends the most time on the eyes, then adds some emphasis to her lips to round out the cosmetics portion.

The final step is to add in the colored contacts, given that the hair is the proper style and color. Add in some posing sessions in front of the mirror, and she’s good to go.

So why the obsession with Miranda Kerr, who visited Seoul to great fanfare last June. Some say that Kerr’s appeal is because her looks are a perfect combination of cute and sexy, a look many East Asian young women wish to achieve. For some, by any means necessary.

Miranda Kerr Stars in Weird Japanese Commercial

You may know her as the extremely gorgeous Victoria’s Secret model. Or maybe you know her as the wife of equally gorgeous Orlando Bloom. Well now you can know her as spokeswoman for a Japanese laundry detergent, Bold.

For the first commercial, Kerr interacts in a friendly conversation with her neighbors… while driving a pink car filled with laundry detergent. If you think thats a little weird, wait until you a load of the actual dialogue:

Neighbor A: What have you been up to?
Miranda: I went shopping.
Neighbor B: You bought too much!
Miranda: *shrug and a wink*
Neighbor A: Ah, Bold!
Miranda: It’s so cute and pink!
Neighbor A: Pink?! Anyway you look at it, it’s blue!
Miranda: The liquid is pink!
Neighbor A & B: It’s pink!
Miranda: It’s pink!

The next commercial that Kerr stars in shows her actually purchasing the massive amount of detergent. Unfortunately, this time Kerr doesn’t get to show off her (rather impressive) Japanese speaking skills. All she needs to do is strut down an aisle with a cart full of detergent and the whole store goes nuts for it:

As strange as these lines are, they certainly can’t go wrong with a pretty girl snuggling a towel right? Besides, having Miranda Kerr is quite the step up from their former, more awkward, spokeswoman:
