Countdown to KCON 2013 | Fashion Post: What to wear for the big weekend!

KCON 2013 is just around the corner, and the question that has risen for most (if not all) attendees is this: “WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR?!”  With thousands of fellow hallyu fans and not to mention a notable handful of idols in attendance this year, the pressure is on to find that perfect outfit.  Stuck on what to wear this year?  No fear!  We’ve broken down KPOP fan fashion into three rough categories, based on what we’ve observed (and worn) from our own time in the hallyu scene.  Take a look at what may suit you!

The Style Mavens

Admittedly, you’re a K-Pop fan.  You have your favorite artists, biases/ideal types and OTPs (one true pair for those who may not be familiar), but the visual cues of your fandom memberships are subtle.  You choose to set off your fashion-forward outfits with K-Pop accessories, ranging from phone cases to rings to necklaces, phone cases or even those cute socks with your favorite idol’s face on them (hidden by your sneakers, of course).  Though you love your idols just as much as the next person, you’re fine with showing your love through small displays.

So something like this…

Worn with something like this…

(From L to R: G-Dragon “One of a Kind” necklace, EXO ring, Teen Top rings)

Shameless Stans

You’re equally as devoted to making a fashion statement as you are about showing off your KPOP loyalties.  Whether a shirt emblazoned with Dynamic Duo’s faces, a GD snapback a la “Bad Boy,” or a pair of Teen Top socks (with appropriate shoes), you’re not afraid to show others where your loyalties lie.  And as popular fashion-blogger Tricia Gosingtian shows, the “fangirl/fanboy” look can be much more than just wearing a t-shirt and jeans — but regardless of sartorial tendencies, you’re a clear KPOP fan.

Tricia’s take on KPOP fan fashion:

(Clearly, Trica’s a GD/Big Bang stan.)

Besides Tricia’s GD-inspired tops (which we’re absolutely in love with), here’s some other things that you can pick up for your outfit, picked especially for KCON:

(K)osplayers

You’re a fan who is wholly committed to the cause…of KPOP.  You’ve done your extensive research and everything from your hair, makeup and clothes is a carbon copy of your favorite idol.  Whether it’s donning the same Joyrich/Chrome Hearts/Stussy/HBA/(insert cool streetwear brand here) T-Shirts and jerseys, colorful clothes, or homemade costume ala your favorite music video, you are a perfect double take for your favorite oppa, unnie or dongsaeng.  With a deluge of KPOP online shops making it ridiculously easy to know what clothes your favorite idols are wearing, it’s easier than ever to become an idol, or at least, look like one.

Some great (k)osplays from online:

But hands down, one of our personal favorites — little Big Bang!

So now that you’ve seen the different styles, what will you be wearing at KCON this year?

The Daily SHAG | Super Junior’s Lee Donghae

For those of you familiar with the K-Pop scene, you may be familiar with today’s SHAG, Lee Donghae, known simply as Donghae by his teems of fans. A member of the SM Entertainment mega-group Super Junior, Donghae originally wanted to be an athlete, but was convinced by his father to pursue singing. After winning an SM-sponsored contest in 2001, alongside future band member Sungmin, Donghae was casted into SM Entertainment and made his official debut with the group in 2005.

hae-ceci-ipad-part-6-4Despite being in a 12-person group, Donghae has made his own mark on the K-Pop scene, for not only his musical talents as a singer-songwriter-dancer, but also for his eye-catching looks. With a perfect smile and chiseled body, Donghae has mastered the elusive boy-next-door look, if your next door neighbor happened to be a gorgeous, multi-hyphenated K-Pop star. And with SuJu showing no signs of slowing down, we’re more than happy to see much more of Donghae in the future.

TVXQ! Live World Tour in Los Angeles

TVXQ, the proclaimed “Kings of K-Pop,” performed this past Friday in Los Angeles’ Nokia Center for their “Catch Me World Tour.”  This was the duo’s, made up of Max Changmin and U-Know Yunho, first time playing in the City of Angels as a solo act.  From the electrifying, or more appropriately, laser-filled, bass-booming opening, it was clear that the pair was determined to give a strong stage and leave lasting impression for their fans, who they said “waited for basically ten years” for this show, and they did not disappoint.

They performed tracks from their newest album, “Catch Me”, and much to the delight of long-time fans, older hits like the electro-pop “Mirotic,” the bass-filled “Purple Line,” and the ballad “Unforgettable.”  Though the 2 ½-hour show undoubtedly catered to Cassiopeia’s, which is the name of TVXQ’s fans (a group of mostly teenage and young adult Asian American women), it was clear that the duo has incredible talent, stage presence and a well-balanced dynamic.  Yunho had charming charisma, showing off his dance skills and even leading a fan chant; on the other hand, Changmin was a bit on the quieter side but truly shined whenever he put his incredible vocals on display, highlighted by his solo ballad.

As a “sort-of” outsider looking in (because although I’m a fan of K-Pop, I’m a self-proclaimed VIP, or fan of BIGBANG, another guy group), the show was an impressively dynamic spectacle.  Visually, it was an aesthetic gem, with an uber-clear LED flashing moving graphics, lasers, eye-catching stage outfits (i.e. denim jackets with chains running down them) and perfectly clean choreography.

The group gave bundles of fan service with numerous videos, and more impressively, greeting the fans personally by walking through the aisles of the theater.  Needless to say, the audience went crazy.

In one of the more touching moments of the concert, the fierce expressions that Yunho and Changmin had throughout the concert changed into ones of sincere gratitude when, during the song “I’ll Be There,” fans held signs that said (in hangul), “We’ll always be here,” a powerful statement considering the headlines the act has made in the past few years.

It was almost like being part of a warm, triumphant homecoming, just with one of the biggest K-Pop acts today.

2NE1′s Official Comeback

You read correctly! The long-awaited 2NE1 comeback is now officially set for July of this year. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun Suk, personally confirmed this himself. He added that instead of releasing the songs at once, 2NE1 will release one music video every month until their October showcase. This guarantees at least four songs for their album. The first song to be released is Falling in Love which is said to have a reggae feel and utilize oversea’s choreographers. Concerts will be planned after the release of the album in October, but no information regarding that has been released yet.

We’re more than excited to see brand new style and genre that 2NE1 plans to give us for this album. Could it be anything like their 2NE1 Loves teasers? Check them out for yourself!
