“According to the Family Sleep Institute, the typical adult requires between seven and nine hours of sleep each night to restore, rebalance and repair all that was depleted from our bodies during the day. To that end, Karin Shieh, co-founder of the online home goods company Crane & Canopy (craneandcanopy.com), offers some quick tips for the bedroom to maximize our sleep experience as we transition into warmer weather.”
1. Wash and store your winter bedding.
You’ll want to ditch all those extra blankets you’ve been layering during the winter and pick bedding that will keep you comfortable. Make sure you wash and thoroughly dry all winter bedding before you store it. You can store them in vacuum-sealed bags or in boxes underneath your bed to save space and to protect from insects.
2. Keep your pillows smelling fresh.
To wash feather and down pillows, fill your sink with ¾ warm water and a scoop of powdered laundry detergent. Squish your pillow under the water until it’s completely soaked, then drain your sink, and squeeze out any excess water from your pillow. Place your pillow in the dryer with a few clean white towels and dry it on low heat. Hang it up to finish drying completely. For synthetic or foam pillows, machine-wash on a gentle cycle with powdered detergent and warm water. Finish by drying in moderate heat with clean towels.
3. Take care of those pesky allergens.
As the temperature increases, so do the pollen and allergens in the air. To keep your bedroom dust- and allergen-free, first de-clutter your bedroom. When there are things piled up, dust will build up. You can leverage spaces like underneath your bed or your ottoman as extra storage to reduce clutter. Make sure to do a thorough dusting prior to vacuuming your rooms. Your vacuum ideally should have a HEPA filter to catch those tiny particles. It may be smart to have an air purifier in your bedroom as well; it helps collect the dust and allergens in your bedroom so you can sleep better through the night.
4. Change out your winter bedding for new spring-friendly linens.
In the spring, you’ll want to stay comfortable with cotton sheets. Cotton starts out cool, but then becomes warm as you’re lying in bed. The thread count should be around 400 — more than that can get a little weary as some companies place multiple threads into the fabric that aren’t actually woven in. Something that advertises 1,000 thread count increases the thread count but does not necessarily increase the overall hand, or softness, of the fabric.
