Each season, this global ambassador of contemporary Chinese chic takes different aspects of China’s rich culture and incorporates them into their carefully crafted and sophisticated pieces. For 2011, the Miao, an ethnic minority in China, is their inspiration. Shanghai Tang was drawn to their respect for nature, which is reflected in the motifs, embellishments, and colors of Miao’s culture.

Miao People

The inspiration for this collection: the Miao, an ethnic minority in China.

For the women’s collection, expect to see modern reinterpretations of Miao’s symbols of nature. One of the most prominent icons is the butterfly, which represents metamorphosis and beauty. Two of the prints used in the collection zoom in on the butterfly wings with high-tech, pixelated effect. Miao’s decorative and ornate costumes also contributed to the prints the designers created, and they were sure to include minimalist representations as well as joyful celebrations of Miao’s colorful palette. The pieces themselves range from embroidered panels on Mao collar jackets to jewelry-inspired metallic buttons on knits. To contrast the black and white palette, indigo blues and jade greens, colors used religiously by Miao, will be featured as well as red and fuchsia highlights. For the qipao line, Shanghai Tang is introducing a new streamlined, double-pleat dress, which crosses over at the waist.

The accessories collection is also one to look forward to, and it consists of versatile scarves, clutches and hangbags adorned with intricate embroidery and silver beading. Trendy bags for the season are the Braid Bag and Braid Wallet because of their braid straps and Shanghai Tang’s signature jade bead embellishments. Classics, like jade bead jewelry, now come with Miao-inspired silver clasps and silver butterflies. The figure-eight knot belt is also a perfect addition for everyone to accentuate their waist, plus it goes with every outfit!

The men’s collection makes more subtle references, but keeps the predominantly blue and indigo color palette as is used by the ethnic minority’s natural dyes. Stylish men like versatile clothing, and Shanghai Tang offers a wide range for them to pick from. Distinctive separates can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion; a new higher collar can be worn folded or flipped up; and a reversible streamlined, slim-cut trench coat is the modern alternative to the traditional trench coat.

The collection is now available online.
