Prom Dos and Don’ts

It’s time for that annual rite of passage: prom season!
As a woman who’s attended my own high school proms not one, not two, but three times, I know a thing or two about having a good time at prom. Hence, a good ol’ to-do (and don’t) list to help you along on your big night.
DO: Dress Comfortably. Wear dresses you can dance in, shoes that won’t pinch your toes for the rest of the night.
DON’T: Dress like a skank. You’ll thank me 20 years from now when you look back on your prom photos. Save the cut-outs, the sheer bellies and the major cleavage for Halloween, yes? (Or at least a Saturday night in college.)
DO: Go with people you’ll have a good time with. Whether that’s a good friend or a group of girlfriends, be with the ones you’ll feel comfortable with and can share laughs with and you’ll have the best evening ever.
DON’T: Go with someone just for the sake of going with someone. You are an independent woman living in the 21st century, you DO NOT need a prom date! I once went to Sadie’s with a boy just because he was single and I was single and hey, why not! Turns out we had NOTHING in common (read: he was a grinder and I was not) and I spent the rest of the night trying to free myself from his gyrating hips. Not fun.
DO: Plan a fun post-prom event beforehand. Whether it’s bowling or a dinner at Denny’s or just knocking out in bed, make sure your group knows where to go after prom BEFORE prom night. You don’t want to spend hours sitting around asking, “so what are we doing next?”
DON’T: Party at the party. I won’t turn this into a sobriety PSA, but alcohol is really not required to have fun at prom. It just gives you smelly breath, foggy vision and a tendency to puke and trip. Besides, when you turn 21, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get your drink on. Don’t grow up too fast!
DO: Wear fake eyelashes. We’re Asian, it’s only for one night. Go for it.
DON’T: Wear crazy makeup. Blue eye shadows, over-tanning, and magenta lips are probably not the best way to go. Once again, save it for Halloween.
DO: Paint your nails in fun, funky shade. I’m loving crackle nails myself.
DON’T: Get ultra-long fake nails. I know they’re supposed to look elegant, but they’re just an expensive pain in the butt, IMO.
DO: Have fun! Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy the moment.
DON’T: Make too big a deal out of prom. People always expect a lot from the evening. It’s supposed to be the time of our lives. It’s supposed to mean something momentous and unforgettable. It’s supposed to be this whole big deal, but seriously, when did anything you ever highly anticipate live up to your expectations? New Year’s Eve will always suck, picture day will never catch you looking like Cindy Crawford, and your wedding day … well, OK, that one WILL be perfect. So don’t stress and have a great prom!
