Steve Yeun’s Character Development on “The Walking Dead”
Post by Ethel • February 22, 2013 • Post a comment

Korean American actor Steven Yeun is no stranger to us here at Audrey. We’ve featured him in our magazine, in a number of our online posts, and he was the Cover Boy to KoreAm’s October 2012 Issue. He’s become a favorite face of Asian-Americans in the media with his role as Glenn on AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead. On the most recent episode, we were pleasantly surprised to see a character aside from Glenn stand up for the Asian-American community:

In the first season of The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) points out an Asian stereotype that many of us are familiar with- All Asians are the same/Chinese.

Daryl and Glenn on the First Season of ‘The Walking Dead’

Daryl: You got some balls for a Chinaman.
Glenn: I’m Korean.
Daryl: Whatever.

Now in it’s third season, The Walking Dead shows Daryl in the middle of a heated argument with his older brother Merle (Michael Rooker).

Daryl and Merle on the Third Season of ‘The Walking Dead’

Merle: Damn near killed the Chinese kid.
Daryl: He’s Korean!
Merle: Whatever.

Character development? Yup. Dropping some knowledge on his brother about the Asian Community? You bet. Good job Daryl!

Vera Wang Denies Dating Figure Skater Evan Lysacek
Post by Kanara • February 21, 2013 • Post a comment

Vera Wang and Evan Lysacek at a Vanity Fair party together.

During an interview at 92Y on Wednesday night, Vera Wang told Fern Mallis (Creator of New York Fashion Week) that her relationship with with figure skater Evan Lysacek was nothing more of a mentor-mentee relationship and it was not the reason why her marriage fell apart.

“I’m his mentor, his true mentor I hope for his ongoing life after sports,” the Chinese American fashion designer insisted to Mallis.

Last summer, after Wang announced she was ending her marriage (just two weeks shy of their 23rd anniversary) to businessman Arthur Baker, she was reportedly seen attending functions together with the 27-year-old American figure skater. Rumors had also escalated that they had also moved in together.

Wang married Baker in 1989 and have two daughters together, Cecilia (23) and Josephine (19). Wang is known for her haute couture bridesmaids and wedding gown collections, as well as designing competition dresses for various female figure skaters. Prior to beginning her own line, Wang  famously turned down the Editor-in-Chief position of US Vogue (before it turned over to Anna Wintour) after being a Senior Fashion Editor to join Ralph Lauren as a Design Director.

Tamagotchi is Back! (As A Smartphone App)
Post by Ethel • February 21, 2013 • Post a comment

Ready to re-live your childhood? It’s back! The Japanese virtual pet of the 90′s,  Tamagotchi, returns to us in the form of a smartphone app. The egg-shaped device allowed children of all ages to care for, feed, clean, and vaccinate their very own virtual pet. The Tamagotchi craze reached its peak during the mid 1990′s when 15 units were sold every minute in the US and Canada. Now, over 70 million Tamagotchis have been sold worldwide.

Much to the excitement of nostalgic 90′s kids, the app aims to duplicate the functions of the popular device. The app features the same abilities as the original: a feed button, a light button, a play button, a medicine button, a clean button, a health stats button, a discipline button, and an attention button (all in its original placement). ‘Toy mode’ recreates the original graphics, movements, and gameplay of the Tamagotchi device. ‘App mode’ zooms in and allows users a more touchscreen experience. Additionally, the app allows its users to collect various wallpapers, egg shells, and send screenshots directly to facebook.

Sync Beatz  has licensed Tamagotchi from Bandai and is calling the app “Tamagotchi L.i.f.e.”  Download this free app today!

Catherine Giudici on The Bachelor
Post by Ethel • February 21, 2013 • Post a comment

This season of The Bachelor is nearing its end and with only three contestants left, we are able to get a much closer look at all of the girls. This is certainly true for Italian-Pilipino contestant, Catherine Giudici. On the most recent episode, Sean visited the home towns of the last four girls which gave Catherine time to show Sean the ins and outs of Seattle as well as some knowledge on Pilipino culture. With a middle name like Ligaya (Tagalog for “happiness”) and a mother who’s a Pilipino historian,  we were not surprised to see that she was quite connected to her roots.

Before meeting her family, Catherine prepped Sean with a few helpful hints. She taught him to call her grandmother “Lola” which is the Tagalog equivalent. She then taught Sean the polite and formal method for greeting an elder- mano. This gesture is one that is performed as a sign of respect to the elders. The person bows towards an elder’s offered hand and presses his or her forehead on the elder’s hand. After the proper introductions (as well as gestures of Mano), Sean was asked to help make Lumpia with the family- a popular Filipino roll.

In the past, this show has been criticized for its lack of ethnic diversity so we were delighted to see this 26 year old graphic designer bring some of her culture into the mix. To watch full episodes of The Bachelor, click here and be sure to watch the final episodes!
