Summer Issue Extra: MYX-Rated’s Olivia Speranza
Post by Melody • June 07, 2011 • Post a comment

MYX-Rated hosts Olivia Speranza and Joey Guila.

Olivia Speranza co-hosts the new show MYX-Rated, a new segment of MYX Channel, with Joey Guila. The show features a variety of topics from pop culture to consumer electronics. The show is meant to be well-rounded, but in a way that is relevant to Asian Americans. It was literally tailored for Olivia who has always been into art, music and writing, but never settled for anything in particular — the host of Japanese and Italian descent liked it all and this show gives her the creative freedom to cover everything. Her producer is 100 percent open to whatever she brings to the table, she says.

Post by Janice • June 06, 2011 • Post a comment

It’s incredible to look back on the past couple of years and see how much the cupcake has really infiltrated our lives.

The cupcakes shop Sprinkles is everywhere. Cupcake birthday cakes. Cupcake wedding cakes. Cupcakes on a lonely Friday night. Cupcakes after a full day of shopping. Cupcakes on a rainy day.

But take this for a spin: imagine getting a scrumptious box of cupcakes delivered to your door by a princess.

Late Bloomer: Randall Park
Post by Audrey Mag • June 05, 2011 • Post a comment

“I don’t strive for more in a way that makes me feel bad. I strive for more in a way that keeps me excited and having fun.” — Randall Park

ISSUE: Spring 2011

DEPT: Personalities

STORY: Janice Jann

In recent years, Randall Park’s mug has been all over the place. On TV, he’s either awkward-ing it up in KY lubricant commercials, or on House as a patient undergoing a lobotomy. He’s raking in laughs as the lovelorn Carlton in the indie film The People I’ve Slept With and as the silent Henderson in Dinner with Schmucks. He’s gone viral online in quirky short films, often ones he’s written and produced. The 36- year-old Korean American talent is used to wearing a lot of hats. Continue Reading »

Entertaining: Japanese Cocktails
Post by Audrey Mag • June 04, 2011 • Post a comment

When one hears “Japanese cocktails,” one probably imagines a super-sweet, super-weak sake drink. Who knew Japan is considered one of the “big five” whisky producing countries, along with Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the U.S. And with whisky cocktails all the rage right now, it’s a good time to expand your bar menu repertoire beyond fruity, frou frou drinks.

ISSUE: Spring 2011

DEPT: Entertaining

TGIFree Friday Giveaway: Ferrum Professional Styler
Post by Anna • June 03, 2011 • Post a comment

Want hair as gorgeous as Shay Mitchell's? Read on.

I’m a super lazy hair person. I mean, I can spend hours on skin care and makeup, but hair? I wanna just wash and go. It helps that my hair is generally healthy and frizz-free, and that a ponytail or high bun is my look du jour.

But I will say, my perspective has changed a bit after I got a blow-out at Nelson Chan’s salon a couple months back. My hair looked like it belonged in a Pantene commercial and I’m seriously reconsidering the whole wash and go look.

Get Loving Courtesy of Ken + Dana
Post by han • June 02, 2011 • Post a comment

In this day and age, we sometimes take for granted the very rights that our predecessors have fought for, rights that allow us to live our lives as we do now. It has been a little more than 40 years since the United States Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage in the Loving vs. Virginia case in 1967. Until then, in some states, marriage (or sex) between any white and non-white person was considered a crime.

Can you imagine, marriage or sex as a crime?

So what does love mean to you? ken + dana design, featuring the jewelry design work of Ken Leung, Dana Chin and Radika Chin, want to know.

Living Well and Hepatitis Free
Post by Soohee • May 31, 2011 • Post a comment

It’s the last day of May, officially recognized as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop campaigning for awareness of hepatitis B testing, a disease that afflicts one in 10 Asian Americans (versus one in 1,000 in the general population). Hepatitis B is the leading cause of liver cancer, and one of the greatest health risks for the Asian Pacific American community. And in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Nordstrom teamed up with Hep B Free and OCA in their “Living Well” campaign to help raise awareness of the importance of getting tested for hepatitis B.

A Writer’s Life: How a Toothpaste Cap Brought Me to Tears
Post by shannon • May 31, 2011 • Post a comment

As many people know, I cry. Easily. It’s not something I am proud of as it often makes me feel like a big, walking, wet-faced lady-cliché. But I can’t help it.

I was proud, however, to have gotten through our entire wedding planning without one bride-gene fueled trip down crazy lane. There were no hysterics, no bridezilla rearing her ugly tiara-adorned head. Nothing of the sort.

Well, almost nothing.
