Celebrity stylist Mitch Stone has a busy year ahead of him. He will be debuting his new line of hair products, Mitch Stone Essentials in the beginning of 2013, as well as styling many celebrities for various movies, music videos, and television shows. We were fortunate enough to interview the amazing stylist, where he dishes on his new line and great hair tips for the Winter and New Year!

How long have you been in the industry?

I’ve had the privilege of working in this industry for 25 years.  I have always had a craving for a creative outlet. I spent time dabbling in art to music; but when I found my love for hair styling, I never looked back.

Where do you find inspiration for new hairstyles?

Much of my inspiration is found on the streets of Europe.  Like others, while traveling to Paris and Milan, I enjoy the sights and sounds. However, my eye can’t help but wander to the people and their unique personal style. When I am not traveling, I turn to online broadcasts of runway shows – as well as, the music scene as my muse.

What are some good hair products that our readers should look out for in 2013?

I am proud to share that in early 2013, we are debuting Mitch Stone Essentials. For many years, I was hired to be an expert spokesperson for big hair care companies. After providing them with loads of input and feedback, I decided to create my own line. I always felt the addition of vitamins in styling products was critical and couldn’t believe how absent this was from the brands on the market. And so Mitch Stone Essentials was born!We launching with 4 products that I cannot live without.  These are sure to be a person’s “desert island” products because they do nearly everything!

Just because I have my own line, doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate the other standout products available.  Check out the amazing new Spray Waxes from Bumble and Bumble, as well as Oribe.

What is your favorite hairstyle trend for winter?

This winter, wind-swept up-dos are among the hot trends.  This look is a retro revival done in more modern way.  To achieve this style, replicate the look of your favorite 40’s starlet – and then here is the key,  mess it up just the right amount! The look is a little done and undone at the same time.

Another hit for winter are extreme bangs.  Take this classic look and give it a trendier twist by wearing them a tad higher, a bit crooked or thick and chunky.

What sorts of styles will be trending next year?

The New Year will bring about the trends of deep side parts and low knots that are tied back with a twist. In Spring 2013, the focus is on casual, yet healthy hair that looks fresh and not too fussed over. Be sure to utilize products that showcase shine. My fave, Mitch Stone Essentials Lustre’ Drops – of course!

What do you recommend for girls with curly hair? Or short hair?

For girls that love their curls, I recommend the KMS Curl Up line and the Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious collection.  These products celebrate the curl, while making it manageable.  And for the girl that isn’t in love with her curly locks, I recommend a Brazilian Blowout – it is an amazing option that is becoming more and more affordable.

I love cutting hair short and sexy! For gals who wear their hair short, don’t be afraid to play with your look.  With just the swoop of their hand, they can change the direction and height of their hair. Utilize the hair’s texture and tousle things up a bit.

What kinds of hairstyle trends do your celebrity clients love?

Celebrities don’t often make drastic changes to their hair, so style trends are a fun way for them (and me) to play.  That said, one of the most sought after looks is Beachy Waves. They are sexy, young, modern and you almost can’t go wrong.  One must-do: Be sure to polish the ends with product to avoid a frazzle feel to the look.

What are your plans with your career for 2013?

I always looked forward to the New Year and what feels like a fresh start.  But in particular, I could not be more excited for 2013, as it marks the arrival of the launch of my new products, Mitch Stone Essentials!  After tons of time, and some blood, sweat and tears, our proprietary vitamin complex, named VcompS, will be available to the world. All of our products – from our Session Spray Hairspray to our Volumizing Texture Spray – will featured VcompS and provide beautiful, healthy benefits.

Having worked on many a film and music celebrity, I am typically awaiting someone else’s finished product, albeit a movie or a video.  In 2013, I will get to share with my celebrity clients what I have been working on and I couldn’t be more proud.

Where do you see yourself with your work in 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I would love to see myself teaching and giving back to younger stylists and artists in all mediums.  At the present, I am already looking into Advanced Education and hope to have one of my dreams – Mitch Stone trained stylists – fulfilled.  That would mean 5 years from now, I will have been able to make some contribution and provide some influence on the industry. And of course, I will be continuing in my commitment to bring innovative new products and formulations to the Mitch Stone Essentials brand.  Stay tuned…

What are some hairstyle don’ts for winter?

One of my “don’ts” for winter is certain to contradict much of what you’ve read in the past…don’t go dark!  People have been told over and over again by stylists to go darker in the winter months, when in fact, your skin is more pale and you need a sun kissed look to give you a little pop!  But if you must go darker, be sure to stay a few shades lighter than black.

Are there any hot hair accessories that you would recommend?

My favorite accessory is an extension that can be braided and pinned anywhere you like.  You can even try using a few different shades, such as a blonde and brown to create some fun variations.  For the holidays, keep accessories metallic, subtle and chic.  If you can’t pull off a huge hair clip, don’t try to.  Also, try using a headband for a finishing touch to a poufed bun or ponytail.  Whether basic black from your local drugstore or embellished with loads of sparkle from your favorite boutique, a headband will make your hair holiday party perfect.
