I was first introduced to Thai Nguyen’s work eight months ago at his debut fashion show in March. Back then, he established himself as a designer who creates flowy light-weight dresses so I expected his Spring 2012 collection to be similar. On October 15th, I attended Thai Nguyen’s 2nd runway show for Concept LA Fashion Week and I was certainly surprised by his new collection.
There were definitely pieces that I really liked, but the collection overall did not seem cohesive. There were too many things going on. I appreciate that Thai tried to step away from his comfort zone and try something different, but perhaps he was being too ambitious. One moment, you would see some Asian-inspired prints, then the other you would see lace with fringes and another you would see gold sequins. There were also pieces that were just not flattering on a woman’s body, like the wedding dress pictured below:
The gold sequined dress with huge ruffles also needed to be edited since there was just too much in my opinion:
But overall, it was an admirable job. There is a lot of potential and there are some dresses I would like to wear. However, at the moment it seems Thai is still trying to find his unique voice in the fashion industry and it was interesting to see him exploring different options.
