JV has performed twice on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and was named Australia’s Star Central Magazine’s “YouTube Artist of the Year” in 2009. Fans may have already heard a few tracks featured on the album that include If You Stay and S.A.D (Single Awareness Day), but now can finally listen to JV’s first full-length debut album, all songs written by him. We recently caught up with the 22-year-old, who has been preparing for the album release as well as his 27-city US tour this Fall.
Tell us a little about your debut album Blue Skies. Is this any different from your older songs?
Well these are all songs I’ve been writing since high school. I’ve written over 20 songs, with 4 already released, and on the album. We just released the single Blue Skies, and I’m working on the music video right now. This is my first full-length album and it was inspired by relationships, the ups and downs, and my own personal experiences.
Why is the album titled Blue Skies? Is there any significant meaning?
Blue Skies is all about hope, determination, and being able to keep your head up. There are a lot of ups and downs n life, but you always have to remember there is always a new day, there is always going to be a blue sky. That’s what its all about.
Are there any collaborations on this album? And if not, who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
There are no collaborations on the album; this is my solo album with everything written by me. But I would love to collaborate with people, though. My biggest inspirations are Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz, and would be a dream come true to be able to collaborate with them.
How do you feel about releasing the album? Are you nervous? Is there anything you would’ve done differently?
Since this is my first album, its definitely a learning experience. You know, we’ve done a lot in the past few months working on this album, some of it being last minute. But that’s how it works out sometimes. I wish I had more time, and I don’t know if I’ve done enough, but like I said, its all a learning experience. I’m happy with the album, and I’m not going to regret any of it.
How do you think your fans will respond to Blue Skies?
I hope they like it. Fans can sometimes have high expectations, and I can only hope that I reached them.
What is your personal favorite song off of the album?
My favorite song is probably the hardest song for me to perform. It is also the last song on the album called When You’re In Love. I think it wraps up the album well, it was inspired by a relationship I was in, and its just about how everyone needs love in their life. Love is a necessity. I don’t care who you are, even if you’re a super rich businessman, you need love. This is my favorite because its so real, and it is in my point of view. You know, Bob Marley and the Beatles said it best about love, and I think it is important.
What is your inspiration for your music?
I’m really inspired by hip-hop, pop, R&B. I’m a 90’s kid, I grew up in the 90’s, so you can hear the influence of the music from back then in my songs.
Lets talk about your upcoming tour. When does it start? Where can fans buy tickets?
Well, we’re going to try to do a pop-up show in LA on the 14th, to start things off. But in October, I will be headlining my tour on the East Coast, and in November I will be touring on the West Coast as an opening act for Joe Brooks. You can get tickets by clicking the link on my Kickstarter.
After the release of your album and your upcoming tour, do you have any plans for 2013?
I want to your internationally. I’d love to tour Canada, Australia, Asia, the Philippines, where I’m from. It doesn’t even have to be a huge stadium. Sometimes it’s better with a smaller crowd, but that’s what I hope to be doing in 2013.
