Ah, we’re so close to August! If you’re worried that your summer has wasted away, and are looking for some cool events to go to, I’ve got you covered. For those of you who like to see up-and-coming artists or are looking for a few laughs, this week’s lineup of events is just perfect for you. I’ve got some sultry music, traditional drumming, comedy acts and some improv acts.

A Celebration of Asian American Soul

When: Friday, July 29, 9:00 pm

Where: Far Bar Little Tokyo, 347 E 1st St., Los Angeles, CA

How: $10 with RSVP, $15 at the door

Listen to sultry music by Judith Hill (Michael Jackson’s This Is It) and singer/songwriter Dawen, and schmooze with music producer Trebles and Blues. The event is a fundraiser for Asia Asia Pacific Arts, a cool nonprofit online Asian American arts and entertainment magazine. DJ O-Dub and DJ Phatrick will be on hand to set the mood as you guzzle down some drinks (Hey, it’s a Friday night, you can let loose a little.)

Big!World!Fun! Family Series

When: Saturday, July 30, 10:00 am

Where: Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, CA 90068

How: Children are free and adults are $5. Make a reservation here.

You’ll have to come out to the Ford Amphitheater tonight to catch something you won’t be able to find elsewhere — people making sweet music as they pound on 3,500-year-old rocks specially flown in from Vietnam. As a part of the night’s celebration to Vietnamese culture, performers from the Center for Vietnamese Ethnic Culture & Art will showcase a medley of traditional folk songs and drum on the rocks, which are considered archaeological treasures.

Cake Monkey

When: Saturday, July 30, 10:30 pm

Where: Del Close Theater, 6366 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028

How: Buy tickets online for $5.

Get ready to laugh it up and exercise those abs tonight. Head out and catch Cake Monkey – an improv group of “4 Asian people, 3 white guys, 2 guys named ‘Mike,’ and 1 girl. One of them is gay.” Starring Bryan Truong, this eclectic mish-mash of characters is sure to make you forget your stressful work week.

OC Ladies Summer Brunch

When: Sunday, July 31, 11:30 am

Where: Purre, 2937 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, CA 92626

How: Free!

There’s no better way to spend your Sunday morning than sipping on champagne, getting an autographed copy of first-time author Kimberly Lin‘s book Recession Proof, checking out the latest in skincare at January Labs Skin Essentials, enjoying an art show by Vans, and scoping out the latest apparel at PURRE. Fashion blogger Rachel Nguyen from ThatsChic.net will be there to co-host the event with the Newport Fun Book Club for Ladies, and Audrey Magazine will be there too!

Words First

When: Wednesday, August 3, 7:30 pm

Where: CounterPulse, 1310 Mission St., San Francisco, CA, 94103

How: $15 general admission, $20 “Patron of the Arts”

Words First is a monthly series featuring solo acts by Bay Area performers. Tonight’s show line-up of four performers is produced and curated by Thao P. Nguyen, a communications instructor at San Francisco State University who’s a performer herself. All pieces are written and performed by the artists themselves and range from storytelling to comedic acts.
