With three viral videos and appearances in commercials, roles on TV shows and Broadway, is George Takei the new Betty White?
Three recent videos that have gone viral stars everyone’s favorite Trekkie, the iconic George Takei.
One is a series of social security commercials which Takei and Oscar-winning child star Patty Duke market to senior citizens.
According to Zap2It.com, Takei and Duke are “dressed in U.S.S. Enterprise uniforms advising us that filing for social security benefits online is not as scary as it sounds. Duke (64) explains to Takei (73) that it’s so easy, even William Shatner could do it. (Zing!)”
Watch their video below (and hear Takei speak in a slight country twang).
In the second video, Takei dons another costume–this time, a Spider-man suit– to persuade viewers that he should be the new lead for the The Amazing Spider-man Broadway musical.
The video is actually advertising for Allegiance, a musical Takei actually will star in opposite Lea Salonga.
The web (no pun intended) has gobbled up both Takei videos, with comments chuckling at the campy fun Takei is having and supporting him in his big to don the Spidey suit.
“George Takei should be Spider Man. I love it.” One Youtube comment says.
“You have my vote!” another commented.
On a more serious note, Takei has been taking a large part in raising relief and rescue efforts for Japan. He made the PSA below and has been seen all over television, speaking about the disaster.
It seems that even at 73, Takei is still winning over America. Even though his most iconic role is still as Sulu on Star Trek, the thespian has been steadily working for the past 40 years. Betty White already set the trend of Senior Citizen Chic– we have no doubt Takei‘s pop culture relevancy will stay put for the next 40 years.
