Asians in Fashion | Best of March 2012
Post by Kanara • March 29, 2012 • Post a comment

In previous years, Asian models and designers have been been taking large strides. For example, more than ever – we are beginning to see more Asian faces gracing the pages of the world’s top fashion magazines, walking the runways of renowned fashion designers (40% of the models walking were women of Asian descent during New York Fashion Week in February 2012), and featured in international ad campaigns for popular brands. Fashion designers of Asian descent have also been making a name for themselves, such as designer collaborations with national retail chains such as Target, H&M, and Macy’s. Follow our monthly series as we name the best of the best featuring Asians in Fashion.

Rise of South Asian Models: Vogue India‘s highlight on Alyssah Ali, Ashika Pratt, and Jessica Clarke

When Karl Lagerfield made a stunning move to feature nine (yes, NINE) models of South Asian descent in Chanel’s Pre-Fall India-themed collection last year – it was nothing short of amazing. It’s well known that Lagerfield hasn’t featured a racially diverse group of models in his previous shows. Prior to the show, Lakshmi Menon was arguably the most popular model of South Asian descent (from India). But with this move, more South Asian models are fast becoming more popular in the fashion industry. Vogue India takes a strong note of this of course, featuring three fresh faces: Alyssa Ali (Indian-Trinidian-Candian, IMG), Ashika Pratt (Indian descent from New Zealand, Anima Creatives), and Jessica Clarke (Indian-Nigerian, Marilyn) – in this lovely spread (click on the image to see more pictures from the editorial!).

Robert Lee

The first episode of the comedy about this dysfunctional Asian American family introduces John Ho, the oldest of three adult siblings, who returns to his parents’ house to live with his brother Reagan and sister Lily after getting laid off, divorced, and losing everything. Where will John fit in, with his parents doing business in Asia as usual and his siblings without need for big brother?

Watch the first of seven episodes here and see if you can find a product woven in the story. What do you think of the series?

Get your tissues ready.

Reminiscent of the Pixar film Up, Furiko (Pendulum) is a short film that is a 1038-page flip book illustrated by Japanese comedian Tekken. The comedian beautifully captures the relationship of a Japanese couple, beginning from their high-school romance – to their final moments together.

Furiko was featured on the late night tv program DO! Shinya and was uploaded to YouTube on March 17, reaching over 1,200,000 views since then.

Day In the Life: Audrey Cleo at The Hunger Games Premiere
Post by Audrey Mag • March 23, 2012 • Post a comment

TV Guide Network roving reporter Audrey Cleo covered The Hunger Games red carpet premiere in Los Angeles last week. Here, the Malaysian-Chinese American girl-about-town gives us her a peek into her glamorous day.

As glamorous as reporting from a red carpet movie premiere can be, like many things in Hollywood, not all is as it seems. Sure, you’re hanging out with celebrities, hobnobbing with A-listers and dropping the occasional humblebraggy “Oh, it’s just my job to interview really really really hot people” tweet. And don’t get me wrong – that actually is the job. But you’re also multi-tasking the demands of your producers, your show, the star whom you’re talking to, and their handlers. Oh, and making sure you’re tracking all of this in realtime on Twitter and Facebook. The pressure is on.

And with a highly-anticipated movie like The Hunger Games, with legions of fans — many of whom criss-crossed the globe and camped out for days in downtown Los Angeles to catch glimpses of the actors – it can be a bit like working in controlled chaos, albeit the fun, glamorous kind with fake eyelashes and hunky guys with accents in Dolce suits. Here is my EXCLUSIVE Audrey Magazine red carpet diary covering the premiere of what’s poised to be one of the biggest movies of 2012 and possibly the biggest movie franchise since that other one with the sparkly vampires.

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” featuring Dev Patel
Post by Florence • March 22, 2012 • Post a comment

The gorgeous and ever-romancing city of London was the ideal spot for the star-studded red carpet world premiere of the upcoming motion picture, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”.

The lavish event was held on February 7th at the legendary Burzon Mayfair Cinema and brought out the acclaimed cast and crew of the film.

Director by Academy Award-nominated director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), the film follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India.  This is where Indian actor Dev Patel comes in, who is best known for his previous role in “Slumdog Millionaire”.  The film also stars British actors Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love, James Bond series), Bill Nighy (Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean), and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton, Batman Begins).

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is set to open in theaters in the US on May 4, 2012.

Asian Models Round-Up: NYFW FW12
Post by Melody • March 20, 2012 • Post a comment

Wrapping up New York Fashion Week a couple weeks ago, we thought we’d do a round-up of the Asian models that made the most appearance on the runway this season. According to a news report, Asian models walked in more big shows this season than ever before. “It’s just in their DNA. They’re beautiful, so elegant. Beautiful on the runway, beautiful walkers, beautiful body types — it’s a dream to see them in our clothes,” states Mark Badgley of Badgley Mischka. Among the models that have walked the most shows, we have both familiar and new faces. Familiar faces include Liu Wen, Ming Xi, Shu Pei and So Young Kang. For new and upcoming models, we have Lina Zhang, Sung Hee, Sui He, Tian Yi and Xiao Wen.

Once again, Liu Wen is the Asian model to walk the most shows at NYFW – most of them for big names too, such as Alexander Wang, Anna Sui, Diane Von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Oscar de la Renta, Victoria Beckham, and the list goes on.
