An Essay from Oscar Winning Director Ang Lee
Post by Ethel • March 18, 2013 • Post a comment

With his most recent Oscar win (Best Director for Life of Pi), Ang Lee has been quite the talk of the town. Lee’s list of awards are now an impressive number from Academy Awards to Golden Globes to Critics Choice Awards. Although Lee’s career is steadily shooting forward, this was not always the case for the Taiwanese-born film director.

After winning his first Oscar in 2006, Ang released an essay called “A Never-Ending Dream” where he expressed some personal tales of life before his fame. We’ll let you read it for yourself. Click “Continue Reading” for an English translation of the essay (translation credits to Irene Shih).

Khristianne Uy Crowned First Season Winner of ABC’s The Taste
Post by Kanara • March 15, 2013 • Post a comment

Diane and Kristianne were in the final two for ABC’s The Taste.

This past week, Khristianne Uy took home the grand prize and bragging rights as the first season winner of The Taste, ABC’s new cooking reality competition. The Filipina American chef (who has worked as a personal chef to actor Charlie Sheen, producer Simon Cowell, drummer Tommy Lee, and the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia) beat out fellow contestant Diane “Cruella” DiMeo (who is also Persian-Korean) when guest judge Jose Andres favored her three dishes (Peking duck with chive pancake, seafood bouillabaisse and a braised short rib), which incorporated Portugese and Filipino flavors. In addition to the The Taste trophy, Uy went home $100,000 and a Ford hybrid.

A proud lesbian, Uy told Gay Star News that she had received a lot of bullying on the show: “There was not another gay person in the top 16 so there were some who thought they just kept me as the token lesbian.I got little comments from some competitors like, ‘YOU made it this far’ ‘You’re Charlie Sheen’s chef. Do you just make burgers and hot dogs?’ There was like a lot of bullying – men with big egos.”

She also commented she would trade in her prizes to make gay marriage legal and will donate a portion of her winnings to the Human Rights Campaign and LGBT causes.

Brian Malarkey (Top Chef Season 3 winner), was Uy’s mentor. Anthony Bourdain (DiMeo’s mentor), Nigella Lawson, and Ludo Lefebrve were also other mentors on the show.

Asian Women in Film | Ten Taiwanese Leading Ladies You Should Know
Post by Ada • March 14, 2013 • Post a comment

Sandrine Pinna.

Ang Lee has done more than anyone to bring attention to the Taiwanese film industry, shooting much of his 3D fantasy film Life of Pi in Taipei and Taichung — and always making sure to thank Taiwan in those Oscar speeches, even if his film is about gay cowboys in Wyoming. But Taiwan’s local films have had a recent commercial resurgence as well, catapulted by 2008′s super hit Cape No. 7. More recently, successful films include You Are The Apple of My Eye, Monga, and Seediq Bale, in addition to Taiwan/China co-productions like the ensemble romantic comedy Love. At the same time, Taiwanese dramas are as rampant as ever — and all of this brings us a wealth of new Taiwanese leading ladies.

A comprehensive list that spans decades would definitely include Taiwanese talents such as Sylvia Chang, Brigitte Lin, Lu Yi-Ching, Mavis Fan, Barbie Hsu, Rene Liu, Vivian Hsu and more. But for this year’s Women’s History Month showcase, we’re going to concentrate on young actresses ruling commercial Taiwanese film and television today.

Ming Xi for Jitrois Fall 2013

Out of all the fashion weeks around the world – all eyes definitely fall on Paris Fashion Week, where hot trends are picked off right off the runway. While you may not picture yourself wearing any one of these looks out on the street anytime soon, it’s always good to take note of the concepts and themes of every collection for inspiration while putting together your fall wardrobe. Some of our favorite trends that came out of Paris Fashion Week included: Stella McCartney’s “tractor soles”, menswear slacks, the return of the 1990s (think back to Courtney Love, baby doll dresses, plaid, and wet hair), and purple as a statement color.

Check out below for some of our favorite looks featuring our favorite Asian models!

Japanese Female Bosses Are Cool (According to this Survey)
Post by Ethel • March 14, 2013 • Post a comment

Ever wonder what are some of the big differences between male and female bosses? Well Japan sure did. A survey for Japan Labor Policy and Training discovered the following-

In companies containing over 300 employees:
97.1% of female bosses believe assessment of employee performance  has nothing to do with gender.
72.7% of male bosses believe assessment of employee performance  has nothing to do with gender.

In companies containing 100-299 employees:
93.6% of females bosses believe assessment of employee performance  has nothing to do with gender.
53.5 % of male bosses believe assessment of employee performance  has nothing to do with gender.

On assigning business trips and overtime duties:
72.2% of female supervisors make no distinction based on gender.
53.5% of male supervisors make no distinction based on gender.

Clearly the female population of Japanese bosses seem more intent on equality in the workplace. Is this the same case for us?
