From remembering 9/11 to an empowering musical showcase to our own Audrey’s Fashion Night Out, here are this week’s Happenings.

Barriers

When: Now to Sunday, September 18th

Where: 145 6th Ave, New York

How: Purchase tickets here.

Taking place four months after 9/11, Barriers deals with the Chinese/Pakistani Abbas family, and the loss of their oldest son Nabhil at the World Trade Center. As this multicultural family begins to disintegrate, we piece together the past each one hides, and the future they all share. Originally mounted in 2002 and then subsequently co-produced with the Asian American Theater Company in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2003, Barriers is returning to the stage to look back on the ten-year anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy. The play is written by Rehana Mirza and directed by Colete Robert.

Who, What, Wear | Audrey’s Night Out 2011
Post by Janice • September 08, 2011 • Post a comment

In the midst of our very fabulous 2011 fashion show, Audrey’s Fashion Night Out, one of my favorite things to get all wrapped up about is the clothes.

This year, we have seven FABULOUS designers showcasing their wears. Just looking at their Fall/Winter look books got me all hot and bothered.

Here are some of my favorite picks from each line.

Eryn Brinie

Look at those ruffles! And that sweet bow on the side of the gray pencil skirt? I can definitely see myself with this sexy secretary look around the office.

“My stylist, Amanda, is the best, but I have no idea what looks good. Even just walking down the street, our cast is very good at that. They clean up real well and I’m like, in sweats and Nikes. I love it, but I think I should start looking nicer.” — Jenna Ushkowitz

We think Jenna looks pretty darned nice already and have compiled a few of our favorite looks from the starlet – including EXCLUSIVE quotes from our Fall ’11 Interview!

Forever 21 Steals Songs As Well
Post by Janice • August 18, 2011 • Post a comment

Sigh…seems like fashion designers are not the only people Forever 21 is stealing from.

Singer-songwriter David Choi was surprised to find lyrics from his song, “That Girl,” embossed on a Forever 21 tee-shirt.

“I’m disappointed that Forever 21 [because I felt] like they didn’t have to ask permission to use my lyrics in their commercial product, but I’m also flattered at the same time,” the Youtube star told Audrey Magazine.

Well, those are good lyrics. Check out the music video for “That Girl” below and see if you can spot the stolen words.

Forever 21, when will you stop?! We also wonder, how does hearing about these copyright issues affect your impression of the fast fashion mega-brand? Let us know below!

Fast fashion mega-brand Forever 21 is under fire again for producing designs a little too similar to original pieces by other designers.

NAMI SS12 Preview
Post by Anna • August 12, 2011 • Post a comment

Sarah Nami Ahn is one mega-talent. Originally on a path to becoming a neuroscientist (she obtained her PhD from UCLA), the Korean American changed course after her brother got into a motorcycle accident. She spent six months in the hospital nursing her brother back to health. She then went on to work for renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler and opened her own design firm, Nami Design. (Check out our story on her in our Summer 2011 issue.)

But that wasn’t enough for the triple threat: While taking some fashion courses at FIDM, Ahn submitted a design for a national contest held by apparel line Laundry by Shelley Segal — and won! (Her LBD design is currently being sold at major department stores.)

A sneak peek at one look from NAMI's Spring/Summer 2012 debut collection, a modern take on the Korean traditional dress called the Hanbok.

Now Ahn is getting ready to debut her first ready-to-wear collection under the label NAMI for Spring/Summer 2012. Inspired by her Korean heritage and the art of origami, Ahn incorporated pleating details and unique fold-up sleeves into her designs. Her signature look is the modern take on the “hanbok,” the Korean traditional dress (see photo above). We can’t wait to see more!

For more info, please check out the NAMI facebook.
