It’s almost swimsuit season and I’ve finally made it back to the gym after a five-year (yes, you read that right) hiatus.
Of course, I know the benefits of exercise (staving off PMS and depression, preventing osteoporosis, etc.), and I swear, I’ve been meaning to go. But other than that nagging in my conscience telling me I’m getting older, I’ve got to start exercising, I was able to maintain my weight thus far through healthy eating and running after my nieces. But when I strained a muscle in my lower back last month — just vacuuming, of all things! — I knew I had to return to the gym.
It helped, I admit, that I had just gotten some workout clothes from Marika. Marika specializes in lifestyle-driven activewear designed for everything from the gym to Pilates, from yoga to cardio. But it’s not just clothes for the gym. Their Balance line is stylish enough to wear around town, and their Miracles line features shape-enhancing, technologically advanced materials which help you look good while you work out.
Indeed, to my surprise, workout gear has come a long way. Balance by Marika’s “New Wave” color block v-neck racerback tank features a built-in shelf bra and is long enough to cover the dreaded muffin top. The matching yoga capri has a wide, slightly low-rise waistband and flat lock stitching along the side seams for a flattering fit. Other styles feature Marika’s signature “Dry Wik” fabric to wick wetness away from the skin, as well as removable padding and super breathable “Cool Max” lining.
So now that I’m back on the treadmill, I wanted to share some of the wealth with you. Marika is giving three lucky readers not only a workout outfit, but one from their Miracles collection.
Think of it as Spanx-meets-workout wear that magically improves your posture, lifts the butt, controls the tummy and otherwise contours every other part of your body before you even take a single step on that elliptical machine. The miracle is in the construction — the piecing, construction and stitching — as well as the technology. Marika uses their exclusive two-way stretch fabric, Elasta-Tight, which provides body-enhancing support without any of the constriction.
So now you’re not only working out to get hot, you’ll look hot while doing it.
We have one small set, one medium set and one large set (each set contains one tank, either waist cincher or uplifting, and one tummy control capri), so just tell me what size you need by commenting below. You have till May 19, 11:59 pm to enter. (You must have a U.S. mailing address in order to win.)
Good luck and happy exercising!

I’ll admit it. I’ve never taken very good care of my eyes. I’ve yanked, pulled and rubbed my eyes with abandon all throughout my 20s and well into my 30s. I’ve stayed up late (I’m a night owl) and never worried about the state of my eyes the next morning. My excuse? I’m Asian! I’ll never have saggy, wrinkly eyes. Sadly, the day I’ve been in denial about has finally arrived. The skin around my eyes is noticeably thinner. Where I once rubbed or pulled with confidence knowing my eyelids would snap right back into place, and never turned down another glass of wine even though the hour was well past midnight, I have to be a little more careful now.
Mark has launched its most recent collaboration with award-winning handbag designer Carlos Falchi, and it’s available now! Called the Rio Beauty and Fashion Collection, the collaboration is inspired by Falchi’s native Brazil, which of course means it’ll feature plenty of sexy beachwear, globetrotter-inspired jewelry and glow-inducing makeup, shoes and handbags!
And to celebrate, celebrity makeup artist and mark beauty expert Mai Quynh gives you her tips on how to rock the Rio Beauty look.
Mai: “Glowdacious — these luminizing powders are perfect all year round. They add a subtle radiance to the face. You can wear it alone or on top of your blush. I like adding it on top of blush because it gives an added glow to the face. Try applying it above the cheekbones for a nice highlighting effect too. These powders are great for someone who doesn’t normally wear highlighters and wants to add dimension to the face.”
Mai: “My favorite shades of Totally Balmed are Totally Cute and Totally Hot. These new tinted lip balms moisturize your lips while adding a subtle wash of color. They’re also great because they have an SPF 15. I love applying this to my lips first and then adding lip gloss on top. Totally Balmed makes my lips feel so soft, it helps my lip gloss go on smoothly.”
Other products in the Instant Vacation Rio collection include lip lacquers with a hint of spearmint oil, cream eyeshadows in bold shades, and two different fragrances (Rio Rythms features jasmine petals, gardenia and vanilla, while Rio Bikini blends flirty kiwi, melon and coconut).
All available at meetmark.com.

Freckles may be cute, but the effects of photoaging (sun damage) aren’t so adorable. But sometimes, life gets in the way, making it difficult to slather on a shot-glass full of sunscreen every time you go out. This editor has been guilty of making a quick run to the grocery store sans sunscreen. And while there is always the dermatologist, let’s face it, we can’t always stand to wait a whole month to get an appointment.
It’s safe to say that over at Audrey Magazine, we get a lot of pretty cool products, sometimes months before they hit the shelves. Over the course of the eight years we’ve been publishing, I’ve seen plenty of beauty products and never have enough shelves in my bathroom to fit them all. Some products get prime shelving, right above or around the sink with constant attention. Marie Louise Cosmetics is one of those brands and the brand’s washing foam is something special.
Just a couple of quick pumps yields a luscious little cloud of cleansing foam. And we’re not talking that wispy stuff you get at fancy restaurant bathrooms — this is luxurious, velvety foam that tells you it’s not only gonna wash all that dirt and makeup clean off, but it’s gonna do it with a little style and a little love. After all those no-nonsense scrubs I’ve been using lately, my skin deserves a little babying. And so does yours. Do your skin a favor and grab a bottle on sale today only at AudreyShops.
It seems like there is a plethora of serums everywhere you look, all purporting to do one amazing thing or another, but only succeeding in going on as a goopy, sticky mess. Not so with Anokha’s Jasmine Serum. At first glance, the serum looks pretty modest and unassuming. But a closer look reveals that the serum is actually a moisturizer.
Anokha’s Jasmine Serum is made with almond, sandalwood and jasmine oils — all in keeping with the company’s philosophy of using all-natural ingredients, many of which are found natively in South Asia. After cleansing, I rubbed a few drops into my hands and massaged the serum over my face. Surprisingly, the clear jasmine-smelling serum absorbed almost instantly into my skin — no stickiness! Instead, my skin felt like it had just enough moisture, without being overly so, like I was born with naturally soft skin. That old saying “as soft as a baby’s bottom” comes to mind. The clean, jasmine scent doesn’t hurt either. Since then, any time I feel a spot of dryness, I rub a couple of drops of this on, even over makeup. Dryness, totally gone.
Last year, the daughters of Benefit Cosmetics’ founders announced that they were joining their mothers’ company with the debut of a new line of cool and cute perfumes, inspired by London’s Crescent Row. Their latest second iteration is just as cute as the first. Dubbed the Second Story, these three eau de toilettes feature the same whimsical package-inspired storytelling as the first set in three new scents.
Look for a complete editorial in our Summer issue, set to hit the street in June. In the meantime, we’re giving away one fragrance, Garden of Good and Eva, from the second release — which hasn’t hit the stores yet! A fresh, light scent that fits just about anyone. Be the first to rock this scent by winning it here. Retails for $36. Yours for zilch. Just comment below until 11:59 April 21. Good luck!
Finally! We have a face that represents us in one of largest cosmetic companies in the world. The next time you see an Estée Lauder ad in a fashion magazine, look for Chinese model Liu Wen.
As the first model from China signed by Estée Lauder, Liu joins the brand’s roster of global beauties that include Hilary Rhoda (U.S.), Elizabeth Hurley (U.K.), Anja Rubik (Poland), Liya Kebede (Ethiopia) and Constance Jablonski (France). Liu will make her debut in the brand’s global advertising campaigns beginning June 2010.
“Estée Lauder has always searched for global beauties that define a generation,” said Aerin Lauder, senior vice president and creative director, calling Liu a “beauty of our time.” Jane Hertzmark Hudis, global brand president, said that Liu has the “style and confidence that reflects Estée Lauder’s modern vision of global beauty.”
Originally from Beijing, the 5-foot-10.5-inch model, known for her dimples, exploded onto the international stage in Paris on the Spring 2008 runways of Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier. Liu has since a fixture on the runways of New York, Milan and Paris, walking a total of 49 shows for the Autumn/Winter 2010 season, including Rodarte, Derek Lam, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Fendi, Bottega Veneta, Salvatore Ferragamo and Balenciaga. She has shot editorials with the world’s top fashion photographers and has recently appeared on the cover of Chinese Vogue, and in editorials for W as well as the French, Japanese and Chinese editions of Vogue.
So, what do you think of Liu Wen’s look? Do you think she’ll make Estée Lauder more appealing to Asian American women?

I woke up one morning to find a strange vision — during the night, my left eyelid had formed a deep crease giving me that eyelid fold I had so coveted throughout my impressionable years. But now, well into my 30s and happy with my looks, nothing could have been more horrid. I felt disfigured and vowed to rid this “wrinkle” form my lid. I tried every anti-aging/anti-wrinkle cream I could get my hands on, but nothing seemed to work on this crevasse on my eyelid. So I walked around with a curl of hair masking the offending crease.
Enter hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the body and helps to plump up skin, temporarily smoothing wrinkles. It’s like adding a breath of air to a slightly deflated balloon. I slathered it on and woke up the next morning to find the fold neatly ironed out. Miracle upon miracles!
And so, when I learned that hyaluronic acid lay at the core of Laveré’s HYDRO Sensation Moisturizing Cream, I couldn’t wait to try. The certified all-natural, vegan moisturizer isn’t the thickest moisturizer, which makes it soak pretty quickly into skin. It just feels like its chock full of skin-tingling goodness. After just one application on a particularly dry area, my skin honestly felt totally hydrated, not to mention the little wrinkles that appeared smoother. In fact, the company says that 85 percent of 30 women in their 30s who tested the HYDRO line noticed a difference. Count me as one of them.
