You Won’t Believe What Steven Yeun Is Ashamed of

This past Sunday night, The Walking Dead fans were glued to their screen to watch the much-anticipated season 4 premiere. AMC reported that this premiere broke the series record with 16.1 million viewers.

Of course, we were most excited to see our favorite character, Glenn, continue with his on-screen romance. Actor Steven Yeun mentioned there would be “more loving, less shoving”  and true his word, the episode was filled with Glenn’s worry over Maggie’s well-being.

But if you’re like us and didn’t think one episode was enough Steven Yeun, then you’re in luck. The Korean actor made an appearance on Conan and divulged quite a bit of information about his personal life. If you thought our list of 5 Reasons We Love Glenn was not enough, how about some reasons to love Steven Yeun?

During one portion of the interview, Yeun revealed which of his body parts he was uncomfortable with. Can you guess what it is?

That would be his abnormally small nipples. At least he thinks they are. During the interview, he claims that while most men have quarter-sized nipples, he has maybe half a dime. Check out the hilarious conversation below:

 

Yeun also talked about very unfortunate outcomes of his film location. Even more horrifying than walkers, he describes finding a tick latched onto a very unfortunate body part. “I had a guy… on my guy.” says Yeun.

 

Finally, Yeun goes against his character’s natural instinct. While Glenn has proven to be a survivor, Yeun has other plans. He claims that if zombies/walkers were to take over, he would just get bit. He reasons that the experience may very well be orgasmic.

Disney Princess MULAN Is Bisexual in “Once Upon A Time”

This past Sunday’s episode of Once Upon A Time was groundbreaking for both the show and for the history of television itself.

Once Upon A Time is an ABC drama series which takes actual characters from fairy tales and throws them into the “real world” after having lost their memories of their life in the fairy tale world. Who can forget our excitement when we discovered that Mulan would be a character on the popular show and that Audrey’s Fall 2012 covergirl Jamie Chung would be the actress to play her.

Recently, the show revealed some attention-grabbing news about our favorite Once Upon A Time character: the iconic Disney princess is bisexual.

[Spoiler Alert] In the show, Mulan is advised to tell the person she loves about her feelings before it is too late. She then rushes back to Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora. At this point, many viewers expected a confession of love for Prince Phillip. After all, in the previous season, she showed all signs of emotions for him. The show even toys with us and has Mulan ask for Phillip upon her arrival.

Feelings are finally revealed when Mulan admits that the person she wants to speak with is Aurora, not Phillip. Unfortunately, Mulan never does get to confess her love. Aurora reveals that she and Phillip are expecting a child which leads Mulan to decide on the spot that she will join Robin Hood’s band.

The internet is buzzing with reactions to this reveal in sexuality. Some are claiming that they were pushing for it all along and others claim it is not the right angle for a Disney princess. Entertainment Weekly applauded the plot twist and the tasteful way in which Once Upon A Time revealed her sexuality:

This makes Mulan’s attraction to Aurora a pretty huge milestone. Given both characters’ ultra-heteronormative histories — and a general lack of LGBT characters in Disney properties — this twist is an even bigger deal. Remember, too, that Aurora isn’t the first recipient of Mulan’s unrequited love; back in the beginning of season 2, the warrior maiden had a thing for Aurora’s own Twue Wuv, Prince Phillip. That means Mulan isn’t simply a lesbian — she’s bisexual, not to mention one of the few bisexual characters on TV whose orientation isn’t a ready-made punchline. (Looking at you, Glee.)
TL;DR: Mulan’s big moment was pretty awesome, and we should all be impressed with Jane Espenson for somehow managing to queer up a figure included in the Disney Princess lineup… without even making her sexuality into some giant, character-defining thing.

The “Asian Women Don’t Get Breast Cancer” Campaign

Earlier in the month, we wrote about why Asian women need to care about breast cancer despite the myth that breast cancer is not a worry for Asian women. Luckily, we aren’t the only ones to take note of this issue.

 

The National Asian Breast Cancer Initiative is the first national organization dedicated to raising awareness that breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Asian women in the United States.

NABCI is a not-for-profit project put together by the efforts of Privy Groupe, the Asian Pacific Community Fund, the Asian and Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivors Network and the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum.

This month, timed perfectly with breast cancer awareness month, NABCI is creating a social media campaign called the “Asian women don’t get breast cancer” campaign which aims to shine light on the relationship between Asians and breast cancer.

The title of the campaign is honor of  breast cancer activist Susan Shinagawa:

In 1991, Susan noticed a lump in her breast during her monthly self-exam. Her mammogram came out negative, but a sonogram revealed that the lump was a solid mass.  Two doctors in different states diagnosed Susan with fibrocystic breast disease–lumpy breasts–and both initially refused to do a biopsy because, “Asian women don’t get breast cancer.” After the biopsy, Susan was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and opted for a modified radical mastectomy of her right breast and six months of chemotherapy. Ten years later, a routine mammogram revealed that Susan had an unrelated breast cancer in her left breast, for which she underwent a second mastectomy.

Susan is still in active treatment and has become one of the nation’s leading Asian breast cancer activists.  Susan helped co-found the Asian & Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivors Network (APINCSN), which is a partner of NABCI.  To this day, Susan still meets Asian women (mostly young) diagnosed with breast cancer who were initially told by their healthcare providers that “Asian women don’t get breast cancer.”

Asian Mother Refuses to Apologize for Controversial Photo

Mother of three and fitness enthusiast Maria Kang posted a picture of herself and her children on facebook last year. The 32-year-old, half Malaysian Chinese and Filipina mother brought attention to her body in the picture. The inclusion of her sons emphasized that even after giving birth, this mom is fit. Wearing only a sports bra, she revealed her incredibly toned abs and trimmed figure.

The former pageant queen, fitness competitor and founder of the nonprofit Fitness Without Borders, achieved her look by working out five to six days a week. She structured her time to allow for consistent work-outs between raising three kids and keeping her job. Clearly, this hard work deserves some applause, but her controversial photo made the public view her in a different light.

It wasn’t the children or the abs which caused the public controversy. It was the caption above her head which said “What’s your excuse?” that caused the downpour of both positive and negative comments.

Some people considered her an inspiration and applauded her for being proud of what she worked hard to achieve. Others felt that the comment rudely assumed that people make excuses for weight gain. They argued that there are various reasons for weight gain and by not being sensitive to those issues, Kang was being obnoxious and pretentious.

A year after posting her controversial photo, Kang noticed that it was going viral once again and this time, many more negative comments were being thrown her way. She decided to re-post the picture with an “apology,” but admits that it’s actually a “non-apology.”

“I’m sorry you took an image and resonated with it in such a negative way,” she wrote. “I won’t go into details that I struggled with my genetics, had an eating disorder, work full time owning two businesses, have no nanny, am not naturally skinny and do not work as a personal trainer,” she wrote, in part. “What I WILL say is this. What you interpret is not MY fault. It’s yours. The first step in owning your life, your body and your destiny is to OWN the thoughts that come out of your own head. I didn’t create them. You created them. So if you want to continue ‘hating’ this image, get used to hating many other things for the rest of your life.”

As expected, she was showered with even more negative comments than before. The picture, which has been shared over 13,000 times and has nearly 18,000 comments, was swarmed with angry comments for her “non-apology.”

Yahoo reports, “That post brought a frenzy of negative responses, including, “Those precious little things need their mommy more than they need you to have glamour muscles,” “Not that I *NEED* an excuse for not working out, but here’s mine you self-righteous idiot … fibromyalgia,” “You are part of the body shaming problem that is going on in North America and other parts of the world,” and “You are a bully with a super inflated sense of your own self.”

Others have been rising to her defense and claim that she has no reason to say sorry anyway.

Kang doesn’t seem to be phased by any of this. “I wanted to inspire people,” she explains, “I wanted to say, ‘I know you think you don’t have time if you have kids. But if I can do it, you can do it, too.’”

The Face-kini: How Far Will China Go To Avoid Getting Tanned?

We know what you’re thinking. Why would anyone want to wear such an uncomfortable and unattractive accessory to the beach? Well not only is this product simply available in China, last year this was the summer craze.

Now before you begin judging China’s fashion sense, it is important to know that this garment choice has absolutely nothing to do with fashion (clearly). The full head mask, nicknamed the “face-kini” and often paired with a long-sleeved body suit, has become a hit in China because of its ability to protect its user from the sun.

The need to protect one’s skin is a much deeper issue in Asia than some may realize. These extreme measures are not simply to avoid skin cancer. Instead, these measures are taken to satisfy Asia’s obsession with pale skin.

Here in California, it is not uncommon to find women spread out on a beach towel with coconut oil and a burning determination to get tanned. In fact, we even have a number of tanning salons which do the job without the hassle of sand in your hair. There are aisles of spray-on tans and tanning oils just to achieve the perfect California glow.

This is the absolute opposite of Asia’s ideal.

The New York Times spoke to a woman sporting the face-kini. “I’m afraid of getting dark,” she explained. “A woman should always have fair skin. Otherwise people will think you’re a peasant.”

As you can see, pale skin is not merely viewed as someone who hasn’t been out much. Traditionally in Asia, darker skin represents the physical labor of rural areas while lighter skin is a sign of wealth and beauty. As such, whitening products line the shelves of store in Asia.

Just how far will this go? People are found walking around with parasols and gloves just to avoid the sun for a 5-minute walk in the street. Asian media pushes the idea by clearly having a preference for light skinned women. Companies are reaping the benefits of whitening products.

We don’t know when this judgement of skin will stop– or if it ever will– but the creators of these face masks seem to have no problem perpetuating the idea that lighter is better.

Offensive “Chinese Food” Video Made By Producers of Rebecca Black’s “Friday” Goes Viral

“The worst song of the year.” -Time Magazine
“Offensive or just awful?” – E!
“What the hell did I just watch?” -Angry Asian Man

The guys who brought us Rebecca Black’s “Friday” are back and have unleashed a song that may very well beat their first viral phenomenon. Alison Gold is the face of this new troll video “Chinese Food” where she sings about her love for, you guessed it, Chinese food.

The video combines the poor musical abilities of “Friday,” more than a handful of racist stereotypes, and lyrics that leave you wondering what sort of condition the creators may have been in while writing this trainwreck.

The music video was only released yesterday and it has already logged over one million views. It also has over four times as many dislikes than likes, but we have a feeling the producers don’t really mind that. Will it be able to beat its predecessor’s 60 million views? Time will only tell.

If you can endure watching the whole thing through, you may find yourself asking a lot of questions by the end of it. Why are there so many rainbows? Why is a 12-year-old singing about clubbing? Why on earth is there a giant panda bear?

Clearly, Ark Music Factory wanted to test out just how many inappropriate stereotypes they could fit in a tween pop song. As Angry Asian Man points out, “Mongolian barbecue, hot sauce, geishas and an extremely creepy panda man flying away on rainbow power. As you can see, you don’t need scantily clad women to exoticize and objectify Asians — kids can get in on the racist fun too!”

0:16: Now we see our protagonist, Alison Gold, who sing-songily describes her average day of bowling, clubbing, hugging and being hungry. She’s basically your average 13-year-old.

0:59: It appears as though “chow-m-m-m-m-mein” is something of a catch phrase for Gold, almost like R. Kelly’s “toot-toot” and “beep-beep” from “Ignition (Remix).” The first time she says it, she makes it rain; the second time, she brushes her shoulders off (always good to see the next generation paying homage to hip-hop greats like Weezy and Jay).

1:45: Now here’s where things take a turn for the even weirder. Gold’s fortune cookie says, “You will find a new friend.” So she turns around and sees a person sitting at a table by themselves, wearing a panda suit. The panda gets a fortune that reads, “You will find a new friend too,” which makes even less sense once you think about it. Also, options if you’re a young girl sitting by yourself in a restaurant and someone in a panda costume is staring at you:

2:12: Things seemed to be going well in the park, so Gold decides to bring the panda home to play Monopoly with her friends (kids playing Monopoly in 2013 has to be the most unrealistic part of this video, if every trend piece of the last five years is to be believed). That’s when we get the big reveal…

 

2:13: The panda is Patrice Wilson! He also “loves Chinese food, and some wonton soup,” the latter of which would be covered under the Chinese food pronouncement, but let’s not focus on that too much. He is apparently crushing a group of pre-teen girls in a game of Monopoly and Gold seems none too pleased about it.

Kollaboration Star 2013 Voting Begins TODAY

The biggest Asian American talent competition is quickly approaching. Kollaboration Star, which takes place on November 16, 2013 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, will have some of the best talent from the U.S. and Canada competing for a $20,000 grand prize and a ton of bragging rights.

The thirteen city representatives have already been chosen:

  • ATLANTA – ANTHONY BUI, spoken word
  • BOSTON – DEREK HSU, Chinese yo-yo
  • CHICAGO – ALVIN LAU, spoken word artist
  • DALLAS – KASSY LEVELS, vocal/keyboard
  • EAST LANSING – CHRIS LEE, vocal/piano
  • HONOLULU – DA ARAZ, band
  • HOUSTON – MIKEY SILVERIO, beatboxing
  • LOS ANGELES – JOHN & DANIEL RHEE, band
  • NEW YORK – IZZY, rapper/producer
  • SAN FRANCISCO – &BLUE, band
  • SEATTLE – TROY & ARIEL, spoken word/composer
  • TORONTO – PLAITWRIGHTS AND CHARLESTON RELAY, band
  • WASHINGTON DC – DAVE YOON, vocal

 

Out of these thirteen performers, only six will move forward. This is where you come in. The finalists will be chosen by public voting.

Hello Kitty x The Simpsons 2014 Collaboration

Here’s a collaboration we never saw coming. Although unexpected, we’re pretty excited to see Hello Kitty and The Simpsons come together.

Next year, the two very popular franchises are teaming up for a special line of products. Hello Kitty will be celebrating its 40th anniversary and The Simpsons will be celebrating its 25th making this quite a landmark year for both franchises.

This collaboration between Sanrio and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products will bring limited-edition collectibles and fans are already trying to guess what could be in this anticipated line of products. Some guess that because the release of the collaboration will  occur during the “back-to-school” season of 2014, it will be geared towards that.

The collaboration promises “a fun and unexpected take on The Simpsons‘ transformation within Hello Kitty’s super-cute world,” says Sanrio president Janet Hsu.

The first appearance of this collaboration will make its first appearance at Brand Licensing Europe in London on October 15-17 and available for purchase in the Fall.

Image of The Day: Japan Presents The Worst Underwear Idea EVER

Over the years, we’ve seen quite our share of interesting things arise from Japan. We’ve seen snail facialsJapanese commercials that don’t make sense, and even edible iphone cases.

We figured that by now we would expect the unexpected and not react when we heard about the new products and trends. Yet again, we were wrong. As much as we tried to understand this product we simply couldn’t figure out its appeal.

This product, I kid you not, is underwear which deliberately creates a camel toe. Now for those of you who don’t quite know what a camel toe is, Wikipedia defines is as  “a slang term that refers to the outline of a human female’s labia majora, as seen through tightly fitting clothes. Due to a combination of anatomical factors and the tightness of the fabric covering it, the crotch andmons pubis may take on a resemblance to the forefoot of a camel.”

Commonly, this is the sort of thing you avoid. In fact, there are a number of rather successful products which try to help women with this problem. Camelflage is a small insert in panties which guarantees that you will be camel toe-free.

For whatever reason, this Japanese brand is embracing the camel toe and making sure it is part of our daily lives. Our verdict?
