Aww of The Day: Dogs Help A Baby Learn to Crawl

What could possibly be cuter to watch than a baby learning to crawl? How about adding some dogs into the mix?

This adorable Chinese baby, nicknamed Maple Syrup, is undeniably cute as he crawls his way over to the camera. The family’s two adopted dogs, Brown Sugar and Rice Candy, decide to make the video even better and automatically imitate the baby.

We’re not sure if the dogs are simply following his lead or helping him with moral support, but we’d like to believe the latter.

According to ET Today, the mother simply wanted to show others that pets and babies can be best friends. Lucky for her, she was able to spread this message to a lot of people. The video has only been up for a little over a week and it has gained over 1,880,000 views. Clearly, cuteness is worthy of viral attention.

As it turns out, the trio is rather accustomed to fame. They have their own facebook page with over 63,000 likes and a handful of squeal-worthy photos. Check out the video and some of the photos below.

Viral Alert: Justin Bieber Kisses Sandara Park?

When we think of Justin Bieber, our minds automatically go to his never-ending collection of snapbacks, his on-and-off relationship with Selena Gomez and even to his odd obsession with the color purple.

Of all the things that come to mind when we hear Justin Bieber’s name, we certainly didn’t expect to ever add Sandara Park to that list.

Sandara, better known as Dara, is a Korean idol and member of popular girl group 2NE1. Prior to her success in Korea, Sandara gained quite a bit of popularity in the Philippines through ABS-CBN’s talent competition Star Circle Quest.

Although we never would have paired the two together, a simple google search will show tons of stories about the duo, all of which are in shock over a picture of Bieber planting a kiss on Sandara’s cheek. Needless to say, the picture went viral and speculations sprouted everywhere.

But before you start any speculations of your own, it may be important to view the entire picture first:

Clearly, Korean-American jeweler Ben Baller is in the picture as well. In fact he was the one who uploaded the picture and shows no signs of uncomfortable third-wheeling.

But even with the addition of a third person in this picture, netizens are going crazy over the idea of the two stars potentially having a romantic relationship, especially because of their 10-year age gap.  Oh-dara.com reports both negative and positive comments about the pair:

“Please take care Dara,”
“Justin Bieber and Sandara Park, is a fresh combo,”
“A gathering of shining stars,” “No one is even interested at Ben Baller,”
“Nooooo. My Dara-noona,”
“They must’ve talked a bit since Sandara Park can speak English well”
“Justin Bieber, please put into mind that she is a noona to you,”
“Justin Bieber fell under Sandara Park’s charm,”
“Justin Bieber and Sandara Park match each other,”
“A hot expression of affection,”
“You guys surprisingly match well,”
“Does Justin Bieber know that there’s a 10-year gap between him and Sandara Park?” “It’s nothing, Sandara Park makes anyone look good,”
“About Justin Bieber kissing Sandara Park, Justin Bieber’s fans are known to cause mischief, please be careful Sandara Park,”

The photo was apparently taken during a launch party for Jay Park’s hip hop label AOMG. According to Soompi, Justin Bieber is currently going through his Asian tour and is (clearly) making friends along the way.

Image of The Day: Unbelievable Egg Shell Art

Wen Fuliang, originally a wood carver, has turned his talents on a different sort of canvas. Arguably much harder to work on than wood, Fuliang has decided to carve on one of the most fragile mediums ever, egg shells.

The amount of detail that Fuliang can capture on a single egg is simply unbelievable. The artist has spent 10 years perfecting his craft and and carves his masterpieces using a rotary tool with a diamond tip.

Fuliang begins by carefully extracting the yolk and egg white using a syringe. He then very lightly sketches his design onto the shell . Then, he gently holds the egg with one hand and carves away at it with another. As expected, this process requires slow, gentle and skilled hands. It is no surprise that this art is very time consuming.

According to DailyMail, “He uses chicken, goose and duck eggshells to carve out places of interest, such as the iconic Dayan Pagoda in Xi’an.”

Interestingly enough, Fuliang allegedly lost his job as a wood carver in Shaanxi province and turned to egg shells simply to make ends meet. Through this, he became the first artist in China to specialize in the field of egg carving.

Check out his unbelievable skill below:

Unpaid Intern Not Protected From Sexual Harassment, Ruled Not An “Employee”

With more and more hopeful 20-somethings turning to unpaid internships, many conflicting opinions have risen concerning these internships. One argument is that unpaid internships provide experience, networking opportunities and the possibility of a job in the future. The downside? No pay, no benefits and apparently no protection from sexual harassment.

Lihuan Wang was a graduate student at Syracuse University when she interned in the New York bureau of Phoenix Satellite Television in 2009. Last week, a New York federal district court ruled that she could not bring a sexual harassment claim under New York human rights laws because of her position as an unpaid intern. They argued that because the 26-year-old was not getting paid, she was not considered an employee and was not covered by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Allegedly, the station’s Washington D.C. bureau chief Zhengzhu Liu committed his indecent actions just two weeks after Wang began her internship at the Chinese-language media company’s New York office.

Wang claims that Liu asked her to accompany him to his hotel room while he dropped some things off. During that time, he would discuss her performance as well as a possible job opportunity. Businessweek reports the events upon arriving at the hotel:

In the hotel room, she alleges, Liu took off his jacket, untied his tie, and threw his arms around her, exclaiming, “Why are you so beautiful?” She claims Liu held her for about five seconds, tried to kiss her, and squeezed her buttocks. According to the complaint, Wang pushed Liu away and left the room, and when she later asked about job opportunities, Liu invited her to Atlantic City.

According to CNN, Wang has returned to China and Liu has been fired after the company investigated the allegations.

So are the vulnerable situations worth it? Clearly, the lack of pay is not the only issue stacking up against unpaid internships.

Must-See Video | Welcome to The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

Sure the 2020 Olympics is years away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about it. Japan certainly seems excited to host the big event. Earlier in September, much to the excitement of Japanese citizens, it was announced that Tokyo would host the Olympic games in 2020. Of course, this decision was made after the Japanese prime minister flew in to reassure voters that radioactive leaks from the Fukushima power plant would not create a health risk.

“Here in Buenos Aires, we have received many voices of support and felt the passion from people in Japan,” says Tokyo governor Naoki Inose. “I am overjoyed to learn that our dream has come true.”

By hosting the Olympics in 2020, Tokyo will be the first Asian city to host the Olympics twice, having also hosted the 1964 Games.

In honor of the big event, World Order, a Japanese band which started in 2009, decided to create “Welcome to Tokyo.” The band, which was created by former mixed martial artist Genki Sudo, combines music, slow-motion moves and robotic moves.  The video has already gathered nearly 800,000 views and for good reason — its both hypnotizing and entertaining.

Most Incredible Family Photos EVER

Trust us, you’ve never seen family photos this creative or this cute.

Wedding photographer Jason Lee began taking pictures of his two daughters when his mom was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2006. The girls, who were very prone to getting sick, were rarely able to visit their grandmother in the hospital.

Lee did not want his mother to miss out on her grandchildren, but also knew that he couldn’t let his daughters get their grandmother sick. He decided to utilize his occupation for a more personal project and decided to keep her updated with her grandchildren through photography.

Of course, he didn’t want just any picture. He wanted pictures that told a story and would make her laugh. The results? Visually stunning family photos.

My Modern Met sat down with Jason Lee and asked him to divulge more information about his incredible photography:

Q: How did you get into photography?
A: I picked up my first digital camera a year before my first daughter was born, which was about 8 years ago. I really enjoyed taking photos and getting the immediate feedback from digital and it just grew from there.

Q: How do you come up with such creative photos of your daughters? What’s your creative process like?
A: Most of the ideas come from the girls, from observing them play, or hearing the funny and outrageous things they say. Their day to day life also plays a big role for my inspiration. Creative process, hmm, thats a tough one. After coming up with an idea, I then ‘set up’ the scene, and often use artificial lighting to enhance the images. It helps to plan out the shoot before hand, so at most, I only have them in the shoot for a minute or two.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers?
A: Don’t be afraid to experiment. Take notes. When you have an idea, jot it down somewhere for later. Practice, practice, practice. Start a 365 project, or at least try to shoot something on a consistent basis.

Q: Any quotes you live by?
A: Like in Finding Nemo, Dori advises “just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” Replace swimming with taking pictures and I think you have a winning formula.

Video of The Day: Are You A Real Friend?

What does it mean to be there for a friend? How far would you go to help him or her out? Are there boundary lines you shouldn’t cross? These are just a few of the questions that Wong Fu Productions tries to answer in “Real Friends 2,” their hilarious new short.

According to About.com, the true qualities of friendship include honesty, attentiveness, trust, and care.

“In friendship, being accepting goes hand in hand with being loyal. A true friend rolls with the punches as you grow and change and know how to deal with your quirks and faults. They are also patient with you when you make mistakes — even big ones — and learn how to forgive you when you hurt them. In other words, they treat you as you’d like to be treated, even when you aren’t at your best.”

Are these the sort of things that Wong Fu thinks a friendship is made of? Not exactly.

The creators of Wong Fu Productions have been making shorts for about a decade now. Clearly, they know a thing or two about friendship. In this short, written and directed by Viet Nguyen, Phillip Wang acts alongside Chris Dinh and Wendy to show what happens when a heartbroken friend needs some comfort.

Be sure to check out the first of this series. “Real Friends” was published nearly a year ago. Although it has the same name, this short takes quite a different approach to define what a real friend is.

Plastic Surgery Horror Story: A 28-Year-Old Turned 60

Plastic surgery is no stranger to the Asian community. In the past two months alone, a woman went under the knife in an effort to look like Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr, television personality Julie Chen received heat for having surgery to progress her career and a Korean photographer felt the need to shed light on Korea’s “beauty-obsessed culture” normalizing surgery.

As plastic surgery becomes more and more common within the Asian community, beauty standards rise accordingly. Under the heavy pressure to look beautiful and with easier access to procedures, many women turn to surgery without hesitation.

The debate over this issue continues among the members of our community. While we all don’t have the same opinion on plastic surgery, we can all acknowledge that undergoing any sort of surgery holds potentially dangerous results.

Unfortunately,  Xiao Lian from Gansu Province had to learn the hard way. At the young age of 17, Xiao Lian made the decision to get work done to improve her facial features. She admits that she disliked her thin face and even her own boss would comment on its unappealing thinness. Pressured to have round and cute cheeks,  Xiao Lian turned to plastic surgery.

Xiao Lian looked into various plastic surgery clinics, but always found the price for her procedure too steep for her budget. Finally, through a friend’s recommendation, she found a small clinic who had not yet obtained it operating license, but offered the procedure at a cost that she could afford. She was injected with a substance over 10 times within the span of one month to achieve the plump face she wanted.

Some years later, in 2009, Xiao Lian began to notice her face swelling. Soon, her eyes and nose seemed to change shape. By 2013, her swollen face and droopy eyes had become unrecognizable. She began losing hair and took on the appearance of an elderly woman instead of her 28-year-old self.

Traumatized by her altered-looks and unable to discover why, Xiao Lian allegedly considered suicide. After numerous trips to the doctor, it was finally revealed that her deteriorating face was a result of the procedure she did as a 17-year-old. Tests revealed that the substance injected into her face was hydrophilic polyacrylamide gel — a substance banned from cosmetic surgery due to its harmful effects on the human body.

Xiao Lian is currently going through corrective surgery in Guangzhou, but doctors have revealed that it will be difficult to reverse the deterioration with the substance in her body for so long.

“Even for a minor surgery you need to choose a clinic you can trust,” says one very wise Guangzhou doctor. Clearly, this is advice we must all take seriously.

Salary Gap Between Asian Men and Asian Women

Back in 1963, The Equal Pay Act became U.S. federal law which required that men and women receive equal pay for equal work in the same establishment. The law aimed to finally end the disparity in wages between men and women.

Fifty years have passed and where are we now? Apparently, not as far along as we had hoped.

TriNet, an HR services provider, recently looked into SMB hiring trends, firing trends, salary data, employee demographics and employee benefits for September. Unfortunately, the results are not exactly what we were aiming for.

Although women between the ages of 23-27 have similar salaries to their male counterparts, this salary gap sharply increases after the age of 27. Even worse? In the Information Technology sector, women make much less than men at all ages.

According to a study by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), the salary gap between genders is now larger than 20 years ago and has been consistently increasing.

“It’s very interesting because when you actually talk to employers, they often don’t see it as a problem,” says Council of Small Business Chair Amanda Lynch. “They will say that they actually aren’t treating their employees differently and there is no gender bias. But often the statistics tell a different story. So we believe there is this unconscious gender pay gap that is happening where employers aren’t even aware of it.”

Lynch adds that it is difficult for women to get graduate jobs, often dominated by males, and so they end up settling for whatever salary is offered.

In the midst of all these unpleasant findings, there is some rather interesting results when the salary gap is analyzed based on race, especially for Asians.

salary gap 1 salary gap 2

Interestingly enough, the salary gap between Asian men and Asian women total to about 10 percent, making it the smallest gender gap out of all the ethnicities. American Indian/Alaska Natives have the highest salary gap with more than 50 percent.

Although we understand that this is not a complete win because ultimately, Asian men still make more money than Asian women in the same jobs, it gives us a glimmer of hope for — someday — true equality in pay.

5 Reasons We Love Glenn from “The Walking Dead”

1) He’s a proud Asian
When we took a look at the statistics of people of color who actually win Emmy awards, the results were shocking. Needless to say, an Asian popping up on our television screen is rather rare. This is where The Walking Dead‘s Glenn breaks the mold. Not only is Glenn a popular Asian character, he has proudly pointed out that he’s Korean American. By simply distinguishing this fact, he has stepped away from the token Asian character.

2) He’s the risktaker

Or covering himself up in bloop and guts.

Glenn has continuously risked his life for the safety of his group.

3) He’s loyal to the group.
Although the members of the group are clearly not his blood relatives, Glenn has taken on the mentality that they are. He takes care of them, protects them, and shows undying loyalty. [Spoiler] His anger towards the Governor for what he did to Maggie makes this clear. These are the people he loves and will do anything for.

4) He gets the girl.
No, he is not  the sidekick who’s there purely for humorous reasons. He’s one of the few characters who actually provide love and romance amidst the horrifying setting.
