There’s been a lot of buzz about the upcoming Disney film by the ever-quirky Tim Burton, Alice In Wonderland. This one’s got Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and it’s in 3-D, so you know it ain’t gonna be no Disneyland ride.
There have been all sorts of promos for the film, from makeup palettes to accessory lines. The latest collaboration is with veteran fashion designer Sue Wong, who has launched Sue Wong for Walt Disney Signature, a high-end dress line inspired by the Lewis Carroll tale. It’ll be available as a special limited edition collection for spring 2010.
I am in love with the moody, brooding, textured nails created by Sally Hansen for Tracy Reese’s fall 2010 show. It so epitomizes the look for fall 2010. Check it out:
A new Asian face appeared all over New York Fashion Week, and we had to find out who she was.
Introducing Charlene Almarvez.
At almost 5-foot-10-inches, Charlene Louise Alagon Almarvez hails from Sao Paulo, Philippines. After winning Ford Supermodel of the World Philippines in 2009, the 16-year-old went on to win first runner-up of the Ford Supermodel of the World 2010.
These past couple weeks, Charlene’s been keeping busy walking the runways of Peter Som, Diane von Furstenberg, Rad Hourani, Lacoste, Nanette Lepore, Rachel Comey, Sophie Theallet, Suno, Tracy Reese, Wayne, Cynthia Steffe, and the Academy of Art University.
We think she’s simply stunning and hope to see more of her.
For now, here are a few more shots of this up-and-comer.

So much drama, so much excitement. Tons of medals, disqualifications, trash talking, tragedy, victory. The Vancouver Olympics is practically the best thing on TV right now.
And both Asian Americans and Asians in general are making headlines left and right. Did you see figure skaters Yu-Na Kim, Mao Asada and American Mirai Nagasu do their short program the other day? Amazing.
The beauty looks from New York Fashion Week keep rolling in. And with most of the country still swathed in chilly weather, now’s the perfect time to experiment with the looks models wore down the runway last week.
My favorite is M*A*C’s face chart for Peter Som. Super spiky eyelashes, a shimmery golden eye and vampy lips for an “uptown girl meets Woodstock” look, according to makeup artist Tom Pecheaux. It’s so easy to do and a refreshing change from spring’s pastel profusion.
Remember Debbie Lee, one of the finalists for The Next Food Network Star? She wow’d the judges with her gastronomic mix of soul food and Korean cuisine, which just so happens to be the hottest thing in foodie-dom right now. Frankly, mix anything with the spicy, sweet, pungent, flavorful tastes of Korean food and you’ve got a winner.
Well, if you’re going to be anywhere near the Los Angeles area this spring, you’re in luck. Lee will make her next culinary appearance as a part of the limited engagement Guest Chef Series at Los Angeles’ Breadbar on West Third Street starting today.
Her Seoultown Tapas menu sounds vaguely familiar to Korean cuisine aficionados, but with a definite twist. Taking inspiration from “sool jip” (Korean pubs) small plates, the menu includes Korean rice cylinders with maple smoked bacon and jalapeno ponzu; kimchi ramen with egg drop, spicy fish broth and Japanese popcorn; and slow cooked cod, chile scallion sauce, roasted daikon and mountain rice.
It’s all a preview to Lee’s newest restaurant venture, a Korean-inspired pub slated to open later this year in Los Angeles. And I, for one, can’t wait.
Lee’s Seoultown Tapas menu will be available at Breadbar from February 24 – April 10, 2010, Tuesday to Saturday, 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Small plates start at $8. Call 310-205-0124 for reservations.
I know, I know. I’ve been waxing profuse about spring, warm weather, bright pastels and must-have khaki for the past weeks as we put our spring print issue to bed. (And it’s a good one — subscribe now to get it on time in March!)
But now I have to shift gears and think seven months ahead, otherwise known as fall fashion for 2010, as I’m getting ready to put away fall fashion 2009. Thankfully, the looks coming out of New York Fashion Week last week are inspiring and oh-so wearable.
Your first preview into the looks you’re going to covet in six months comes from backstage at the Derek Lam fall 2010 show. Estée Lauder’s Tom Pecheux did the makeup and shared his looks for the models with us.
If I’ve noticed anything about the spring runways, it’s that I have to get me a good pair of socks.
Normally relegated to hiding under boots or as workout gear, socks are going to be seeing a resurgence this spring. Wear them scrunchy and paired with strappy heels, like at Burberry Prorsum, or knee high and nude to update last year’s ankle boot, like at Alexander Wang.
I just bought the Asian Barbie (#005) from the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Barbie Basics line for my 7-year-old niece last Christmas. It’s the closest thing to an Asian Barbie I could find anywhere on the web that wasn’t adorned in a hula skirt or cheongsam.
And though the doll is not exactly ideal for a first grader (a skintight tube dress and heavy eye makeup), it’s something I would have loved to have in my childhood doll collection, right next Ballerina Barbie and Hello Kitty. Of course, now that I’m a grown-up (chronologically speaking), I’m crazy for a new collection of Cissy and NEOCissy dolls designed by Chinese American designer Jason Wu for Madame Alexander.
What do you get when you cross a lawyer unhappy with her career with a penchant for artistic expression?
Sure, it’s a pretty common story. It’s my story. I know plenty of lawyers-turned-writers, lawyers-turned-restauranteurs, even lawyers-turned-actors. But despite no shortage of dissatisfied legal professionals out there, you’ll be hard pressed to find any lawyers-turned-Goth mistresses.
