In our Summer 2011 issue, host and filmmaker Angela Sun gave us some tips on how to green our life. Here, more of Angela Sun’s green recommendations:

* Cut down on your plastic use. Try these instead:

Alex bottle: A lot of reusable bottles are hard to clean, and sometimes become gnarly smelling. The Alex bottle is great because it screws apart in the middle for easy cleaning as well as packing for travel!

Reuseable cutlery: http://www.nubiusorganics.com/

Glass straws: strawesome.com

* Look for things made with post-consumer recycled plastic. Just because it has three arrows doesn’t mean anything. One of the great things about plastic is that because it lasts for virtually forever and never goes away, it can be re-purposed. However, the recycling of plastic is confusing because there are so many types of plastic. Plastic in the U.S. is categorized under a number system from 1-7. Recycling is run by local municipalities, so some products are recycled in certain areas and others aren’t. The most common is #1 and #2 PET plastic, which make up the bulk of beverage bottles.

In fact, most plastic is not recycled and if it is, it is usually “down-cycled,” meaning it’s sent to China and India to be recycled into cheaper plastic products and then shipped back to the U.S. to meet consumer demand. So basically when you throw a plastic bottle in the recycle bin, it doesn’t necessarily come back as a new “recycled” bottle again.

Confused? It can be. So one easy way to make sure you’re supporting post-consumer recycled plastic is by supporting companies that do, like Patagonia, which uses recycled polyester for their garments. Earthbound Farms uses 100 percent post consumer plastic for their salad containers, Activate Drinks recently switching to 100 percent recycled post-consumer PET plastic for their drink bottles, and San Francisco-based Green Toys makes children’s toys with post-consumer recycled plastic.

* Buy products free of phylates (makeup, shampoo) and other chemicals.

Pangea Organics: Their slogan is always beneficial never artificial.

Pharmaca is a great integrative pharmacy with traditional and holistic approaches to medicine as well as great beauty and hair care products.

Dr. Bronners classic liquid soaps are gentle enough to wash away the harshest of elements we encounter every day. They also come in super sized bottles so you can refill or cut down on unnecessary extra plastic.
